Hi there,

I am registered to start classes with Excelsior October 25th and I am just worried about about working as a RN after I finish. I see they lost their accreditation so I was just looking for some insight from anyone please.
thank you

Are you able to email me?

@emtpbill

Sorry I realize this thread is a little stale now but I just found it. I'm also an EMT-P in PA hoping to finish the Excelsior program this time (started in 2008, had a bunch of kids and a divorce, timed out, you know how it goes LOL), so I'm finishing my prereqs including redoing Micro and A&P I/II because its been more than 5 years for them. Anyway my question is, did your science classes include a lab? Excelsior doesn't include the lab with the classes, and doesn't even offer a Micro lab, and now I'm really worried my education won't be accepted by the board for me to get my license. Any thoughts? I've tried calling the board but its hours on hold and I'm still waiting for a real person, Googling gives me nothing, hoping you might be able to help me out! Thank you!!

Hey,

I also had to retake my A&P and Micro classes and I didn’t have a lab for A&P. I had a lab for Micro.

You mean you had to retake because it had been too long?

Excelsior now has available labs for A&P, but they do not for Micro, and it's not considered a standard part of the degree so if I do take the lab I have to pay cash. And figure out where to get a micro lab, if I need one.

Yes. My sciences and a few of my other prerequisites expired and I retook them with the school.

So for you they had a micro lab but no A&P labs, but now they have A&P labs but no micro lab. And told me I'd have to pay cash for the lab if I want it.

You're still in, or you graduated? And are you licensed now?

I can't seem to get a straight answer from them, probably won't from state either. Considering withdrawing and doing the rest of my pre requisites through Portage.

The online A&P classes I did had a lab portion. It's kind of neat how its set up as its all digital online. Learning how to stain things to look under a microscope. Gram positive and negative rods, kind of cool, at least I think so.

As far as time frames. I think the 7 year rule is still in effect.  The layout of the degree is somewhat different from what I graduated with and you had back in 2007.   Excelsior will be the go to on anything official as far as requirements.

And yes,  EMT-P forever, recently upgraded (very easily) to PHRN. Pa # 083770 for verification.

Let me know if I can help more.

Hi Bill!

Thanks for the reply!

I contacted my advisor and the state board team at Excelsior but can't get any response beyond "this is what is required for our degree". There's no included labs for any sciences now, and that worries me, I'd have to pay cash to add labs to my A&P classes. They've refered me to the PA state board, and I am doubting I'm going to get a straight answer from them either. The whole thing has me sweating it out right now.

I'm terrified I'm going to drop $30k on a degree and not be able to be licensed ??‍♀️

I did not have to add any labs for anything. I paid the course fee for A&P1 and A&P2 and it was all inclusive.

And as far as 30k, good lord.  I feel fortunate I was able to take the Excelsior route when I could still test out of the classes.  I figure the classes were about 1400 when I would have taken them, times 8 is $11,200.  Compared to testing out which was $330.00 times 8 is $2640.00.   Didn't think about it when I did that route but saved me close to 9 grand.  That is if you pass all of the tests on the first attempt, which I, thank God, did every one.  The pressure was on though, if you failed a test 3 times you were out of the program all together.
