Excelsior and Texas - All good now

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Excelsior's web site has not been updates as of yet, but House Bill 2950 was passed this last legislative session and signed into law in June; it goes into effect in September.

As a part of this bill, Excelsior College will continue to be recognized by the State of Texas as a valid School of Nursing and can be directly licensed after graduation and passage of the NCLEX.

This bill basically lays out requirements for out of state nursing schools (pretty much Excelsior). There are some things that need to be met (NCLEX pass rate will be monitored and program reviewed if too low), but it seems that Excelsior and Texas is all happy again.

There are several items set out in this bill related to nursing (like keeping the BON in existence till at least 2029) as well as updating some Nurse Licensure Compact updates to name a few.

Summary of the H.B.

I'm so glad this bill passed! I was very pleased with my EC experience!! It was so convenient and I was able to work full-time while studying with them. Thanks for the update!!

Specializes in Pediatrics.

So good to know especially since I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in the ADN program. I'm slightly embarrassed to say I didn't know there was a chance of it changing recently (my reading extent outside of my school, helping my son and what I must do for my job is non-existant these days). Where do you keep up with your info? ANy specific websites, newsletters, etc?

There really was not a chance of Texas not accepting Excelsior grads to be truthful. There was some wording in a bill passed a few years ago for a study to be done and possibly changing the requirements, but the study itself was never funded, and that bill expired this year. This one just sets some actual guidelines and such, all basically saying Excelsior grads are accepted so long as Excelsiors pass rates stay at a certain level.

Only reason I knew about it was as a nurse in Texas, you get a monthly (or every other month, don't remember which) newsletter thing in the mail from the BON with info, and the bill was discussed on the first page of it this last issue.
