Excelsior Admission

Published

Just curious, I understand that CA. no longer accepts Excelsior grads. However at the Excelsior's requirements for admission into the nursing program it lists specifically Licensed Psychiatric Technicians are admissable in approximately four states, CA. being one of them.

Does CA. accept these techs while refusing all others? Or is this the grandfathered version?

As far as I know, you had to be enrolled in the Excelsior program on or before December 6, 2003 to be licensed in California. That is the only grandfather I am aware of. After December 6, 2003, California will no longer accept any Excelsior students for RN licensure. To my knowledge, there is no exception or distinction for techs or anyone else, but it would be best to check the the California BORN to find out for sure.

It's outdated information on Excelsior's website. They go into detail regarding CA if you search on their website. After the date Lizz listed, it makes no difference if you are an LVN or Psych Tech, you must meet CA specific requirements for licensure and Excelsior currently does not meet their requirements.

If you are an Excelsior RN coming from out of state to California does this make any difference? In other words, say I am licensed as an RN through Oklahoma (through EC) and later move to CA...how would that work?

If you were an enrolled student in the EC program before the cut-off date in Dec. 2003 you can endorse into CA with your OK license. If you were not enrolled before that time, you would not be eligble for RN licensure in CA.

Hey you guys, California and Excelsior are in the planning stages of a deal where an EC grad will be able to take an externship at a junior college in California (nothing real big, something like an 80 hr. two week clinical) and that will fulfill the clinical requirement for California which will again allow EC grads to practice in CA. This was such great news to hear.
