In current health care environment requires nurses with the skills to find and apply the best evidence practice for effective health care. A question comes into my mind recently and would like to hear all of your opinions on this area.
Evidence-based practices encourage critical thinking in nursing
What do you think? Is it applicable in your area of work?
Hope to get as more views as possible because I am currently doing a presentation on this topic.

I have worked in places that do not have "evidence based practice" and those that do. In the ones that don't one notable time I was told by senior management that "A policy does not have to be written down to be a policy" OKaaaaaaay, riiiiiiight and this was the attitude throughout. Research had been done in that facility proving that 2nd hourly eye drops one unconscious patients actually had a greater adverse effect than just holding the eyelid closed - this though did not change the practice one iota.
To work there has to be more than lip service. Where I currently work we are a collaborating centre of the JBI Joanna Briggs Institute. It works as people are aware of the need to back up what they want to say and do.

Where I work...they are hugely evidence based...we have our own research team based in the ER, who are constantly doing at least 5 studies at a time, all the time...Our doctors are ALWAYS quoting the latest literature when giving care...It definitely changes how we treat patients...Our doctors are very receptive to nursing ideas as well...Tell a doctor you read an article about something..and they want to hear all about it...It works very well for our workplace...It makes the staff very educated on the latest treatments for our patients...and it keeps us interested in learning and reading and keeps us well informed for our patients...

We use evidence practice and we will implement changes only after it is proven to be evidenced based.
I am currently doing research on dependency scoring, which will tell us the dependency score for patients and then we can either close beds or approach management for increase in staff ratio. I can only implement on our ward once I have the evidence to back up my claims.
Do you have clinical governance in US?

Cherry Lowe did some research on this for her masters and ended up with a computer program called trendcare - which we use.
