Ever fill out an AUP?

Nurses General Nursing

I was Lead today & we were short two licensed staff for dayshift. I was angry to say the least.

This kind of thing is getting very old. It seems to happen a lot on the weekends. Of course, my immediate supervisor gave the same song & dance about how "the whole house is short." Maybe it was, but that doesn't help me. But meanwhile, I was down one RN and one LVN. I filled out my 1st AUP (assignment under protest). I hear there have been quite a few filed at work lately. I may be filling out one tomorrow, too...we'll see.

How's the short staffing going for everyone else?

I'm wondering if the time will come that we have to strike!

It is also becoming more common for nurses to be excused from legal action when they have completed a frm. It puts the onus where it belongs: Squarely on the shoulders of mgmt./administration. [/b]

I was always told that if you don't fill out an unsafe staffing form you have taken that unsafe staffing on your shoulders and your license. You would be almost as responsible if something ontowards happends to a patient as management.

At least when you fill out an unsafe staffing form, you are putting management on notice that if something happens they will be held accountable. Futhermore, I've had to fill one out during mid to late shift due to it becoming unsafe with the amount of patient's being admitted and the acuity of the patients.

You've got to remember that the nurse supervisors don't want to rock the boat and really don't want to have to call in extras due to budget constraints. But that shouldn't be the staff nurses concerns if they know that the situation is becoming unsafe for patients and staff.

God I love this site. Time we all stand together! And Karen, you are a gem.
