ers fail as the nation's safety net

los angeles times, february 11, 2008

the long waits that government inspectors say endanger emergency room patients at harbor-ucla medical center can also be found in backlogged hospitals across the country, according to the american college of emergency physicians....

"overcrowding in our emergency departments is a national crisis," said dr. linda lawrence, president of the american college of emergency physicians, an advocacy group based in washington d.c. "we no longer have the capacity to serve as the safety net for society."

..the group surveyed 1,000 emergency care physicians and found that one in five knew of a patient who had died because of having to wait too long for care.

My doctors group has an office open for urgent care from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm even on weekends. One of the physicians is there with an LVN. They will suture if needed. They have our medical records on the computer.

And at night we can get an NP who will actually meet you in the office. I met her once and she told me most of the night visits are pfirst time parents with a sick child.

Glad I changed doctors although I haven't needed to use these services.

Our hospital has an Urgent Care associated with the outpatient medical practice: it's for if you can't get in to see your PCP that day and they schedule you an appt at the clinic from 5-9 pm. Not exactly "walk-in".
