As a director of nursing, I am proud to say that I have hired new nurses into the ER.
However an internship programme is very important, allowing the nurse to understand emergency nursing. During this time preparation and certification in ACLS, TNCC, PALS, and preparation for the CEN and other courses such as EKG interpretation as well as others is also essential.
This course is usually around 6 months.
Once the internship programme is completed, the nurse is with a preceptor, the time varies on this, however is extended if required.
The success rate on the programme is high, dropouts usually occur within the first month.
Most places require at least 1yr med/surg.
Good luck to you a future ER Nurse.
