I saw that. Scary stuff. I used to watch ER on TV and there was an episode where a psych patient stabs and kills a med student and one of the residents. I just watched the rerun last week for the first time and was thinking how easily that could happen in real life

I saw ZdoggMD's facebook post about that yesterday. So scary. I have never experienced that level of violence at work and hope I never do.

I worked in Urban Boston hospital and assaulted by a pt. i was the third staff person assaulted that night. I know even though the person has been chaged nothing will come of it since it appears OK to assault medical personnel (RNs and techs) in Mass. Society has changed for the worse when anyone can abuse personnel and no consequences for their behavior. In soughtbridge, he has psych problems but that is no excuse. Where was security. At another hospital where a member of my family (4 RNs) work a pt shattered a mirror and tried to slash multiple RNs necks with no security present. The floors and ED has become more dangerous everyday. These people must be accountable and if Psych is an issue lock them up and get them off the streets because they are not only a danger to the community but also are victims of the very bad people out there who should also be locked up and not released by some judge.
For every bad thing that happens there are good people who deserve care . Patients she not have to witness the behavior/violence of these offenders

A problem is that administrators of our hospitals are taking a "there there, I'm sorry this happened to you ... BUT this is part of your job description ..."
When in fact it's most certainly NOT.
Yet when a nurse gets assaulted, it gets a Quantros, the NM "discusses" the incident and perhaps apologizes for it happening ... but no actions are taken to prevent future incidents. In fact sometimes it's placed back on the nurse (i.e. "maybe you should have yelled for help sooner").
I've only been at my job for 3.5 months and have been assaulted already. Yes, I work with psych patients. However, it's not always psych patients doing this. We have patients who are entitled, "me me me," and it's always about patient satisfaction to the max. It's gotten out of hand. I have RN friends in the ED who I think get the worst of it, but it happens everywhere.
You can't lock everyone away. Even our psych patients wait WEEKS, sometimes months, for placements.
It has to start with the hospital protecting its own.
