We just had one of our NP's leave our Emergency Department group and are trying to fill the vacancy. Question for the group - what is the most important thing to you when looking for a new job? The per hour? The benefits? What is it that really gets your attention?

This is difficult to answer as there are so many factors regarding employment.
Here's my quick list (not in any order)
1. Shift (I currently work 1100-1900) with assurance this will slide toward 0800-1600
2. Flexibility (a few times a month I need to come in late/leave early - kids)
3. Comp time (there is no overtime)
4. Insurance/401-K
5. Vacation/Holidays/perks?
6. Rate, opportunities
7. Support, not only from supervising MD, but staff/mgmt
8. Scope of Practice, patient population, location
9. Working environment/office/staff/peers
10. EMR
11. Why did the previous person leave? Be real.
12. Typical day, supplies, desk/PC/chair/phone/food
I'm sure others will pipe in!

For me the most important thing is the attitude of the physician staff you work with. I had a miserable experience when I didn't consider this.

Pay and time off and most importantly, independent/collaborative practice.
For ER, I expect $75 an hour. The ER physicians are getting $200.
