Hello, everyone! Next week I will be interviewing for an epic analyst position for a large hospital in West Tennessee next week. I have an Associate's degree in nursing with three years of Medsurg/Neurology experience. I am currently in school for my BSN and graduate next year. I have no prior informatics experience but most of my 3 years as a RN I have charted with Epic. I am very interested in this job and I feel like I would be able to excel in this career. If offered the job what would be a starting point for salary negotiations. I don't want to offend anyone by asking for too much but I also don't want to be low balled. Thanks in advance.

Use glassdoor.com to get an idea of the area around you will similar job titles. LinkedIN can also help. First rule of salary negotiation...make them give you a number. I can't stress this enough, do not give the first number. If they ask you for your requirements, just say 'negotiable' or ask them what the low to mid point for this job is. You are entry level so at least you would have some idea of the range for their company. Even if you LOVE the number they give, ask for more. You have everything to gain at that point and the higher you start off, the better your increases will be percentage wise. Also, your previous salary is irrelevant to this position so don't tell them. "I treat my current/formers employer's compensation practices as confidential information just as I would treat your company's." Done, end of story.Good luck!
Thank you nicuguy for your response. I have since interviewed for the position and I am sad to say that I was not hired. I expected to be asked behavioral type questions during the interview but I was basically told how much training was involved and how busy I would be if I accepted the job. I thought I appeared eager and conveyed the message that I was up for the challenge but I'm not quite sure why I wasn't hired. Maybe they were looking for someone whose personality would mesh well with the rest of the teams' personalities. I am very energetic and excitied type and the two who interviewed me were straight-faced and to the point. Anywho, thanks for your advice. I will remember it for my next interview.

Commiserations on the job interview and I've been in both sides of the table. Doing the hiring, getting hired. I know in the past we had equally competent candidates and the decision came down to one person saying, I liked such and such personality's better. I've interviewed for jobs where I was told I was the perfect candidate and still didn't get the job. Quite aggravating, but that's the nature of the beast. Best of luck next time.
