new epi pen law..any teacher/staff member hosting, supervising a school sponsored event, (field trip, homework club etc) must be trained to give an epi pen. having a hard time signing off this one teacher cause honestly I don't feel comfortable him cutting a bagel with a plastic knife, let alone inject a child...he is the lead teacher on an after school event, I am training everyone involved, but still not comfortable.
PS: I am not going, cause now that we can train our "delegates", I am not needed

I would simply let my admins know that I am not comfortable signing him off, its your license on the line if something goes wrong because you sign the paper saying he is competent. I may have laughed a little when you said you didn't trust him to cut a bagel. :)

I'm gonna use that cutting a bagel with a plastic knife reference! You know, Sully touched on something that I don't care for at all; training staff members to do medical stuff. I do not train staff to manage diabetes; we use an outside provider. I particularly am not comfortable with training staff to administer epi-pens. It's not that I'm worried about the medicine hurting a kid that didn't need it but it would kick up such a dust storm if that happened. The last few years I've been "facilitating" allergy training, which includes administration of epi, etc. I show the staff the allergyready.org Back to School training program which walks them through the A to Z of managing allergies at school. Afterward I make myself available for questions but I'm not actually "training" them. It may not make any difference if I ended up in court but it makes me feel better about not being the only name associated with the training if something goes afoul.
Thanks guys...I brought my concerns to the admin and he stated clearly...do what I need to do to feel comfortable, so I engaged other teachers attending the event and trained them, and will have them hold and admin the epi pen.
relief!!!
