Hi everyone. I could use a little advice. Id like to start a small private duty nursing company. I had a client for the past 2 years and as an RN I oversaw her care. There was 24/7 care in her home by companions, non-medical. I worked directly with her doctor and basically her out of state son was my boss. It went so well I thought Id continue and start a small business. I know as an RN my license serves to allow me to practice as an independent nurse contractor legally. my question is does anyone know if i can oversee companions and run a small agency? please help if you can. Thank you!!

Yes you can. I think you will also need a licenced administrator. It's a process you will need to go through via your states health and human services department.

Is the small agency just for yourself, or for the companions too? That is sort of an idle question, but it may change the complexity of your business - payroll, workers comp, unemployment, and such. You will need insurance, both professional and general liability, and you may need to be bonded as well.

Yes, you can hire companions and direct them like any other employee. If they take on any delegated nursing care, it will be under your direction and nursing license. If you don't want jeopardy to your license, I would study up on what companions may or may not do medically, write a really good job description and employee handbook.
