Enrolled nursing maths vs RN maths

Published

Hi all ! I'm wanting to become a enrolled nurse , and would like to know if EN's have to do much maths in the job and the handlement of medications?

Not sure if you have done any research on the role of an Enrolled nurse, but from what I can gather an EN is the same tiered nurse to an RN as the LPN nurse in America. About the only thing an Enrolled nurse cannot do is start blood, give prn DD, oh and be put in charge of an a acute ward. That's about it, so if you are wondering do they need maths for drug and IV calcs and the same level of english as an RN, you betcha. IMHO EN,s are the cheap version of an RN for an employer, cheaper education(diploma) and they get much less wages. :( 2 years education versus 3 years. You do what suits.

Yes, you still give medications so need competency in maths. In Australia, some "serious" medications cannot be given by an EN at all, or an EN alone. They need an RN to do it or to sign off on it, depending on what the drug is.

You need to be able to complete drug calcs the same as any RN.

There are some differences, with some meds/abs etc you can only act as the second checker but you need to be able to know the theory so what you are checking is correct.

I recomend the book 'Maths and Meds for Nurses" it takes you right from the basic maths and shows you how this applies to nursing drug calcs
