Enrolled endorsed Nurse in final semester and needing to embark on a research project

Published

Hi to all. I would like to ask those interested in assisting me in finding out some information. I am approaching my final semester in my studies to be an endorsed enrolled nurse. I have a research project to complete. I understand clearly the role of an een and the scope of practice. I have to research the role of an een with an area, such as oncology. I would like to define that question more, unfortunately i am not allowed to approach any hospitals or start the research untill i define this question. I would appreciate a little insight from anyone. I would like to know if the een is involved in educating the client in the are of cytotxic drugs and the precautions, or roles that the een carrys out under the supervison of the Rn. I am looking for something specific. In this paper i will be covering many aspects of this unit. I would like to define this question and would appreciate a little direction from those who are experience and who would not mind sharing their knowledge. Would love to hear from you. Thanks

BTW if I EVER hear an RN tell an EN they are stupid - that RN would get teh biggest earful they have ever had!!! Some of the BEST nurses I have ever worked with are EN's - why because they DON'T want to be in charge - they want to care for thier patients.

Ditto! I actually was pulled up by a doctor once when I was an EN; I said, "Sorry, I can't do that, I'm only an EN". She turned around and told me not to ever say that. She had been one herself...

As to the topic. Have you contacted the Enrolled Nurse Special Interest Group at the ANF. It is nationwide; they have conferences every year. I'm sure linked unions would also have this group. They would be able to give you a wealth of information I'm sure...

There is also the National Enrolled Nurse Association (NENA). Particularly check out the links section

- website is http://www.nena.org.au/

Hope this helps

Well I am sorry but endorsed enrolled nurses can and do give out up to and including S4 drugs. They(we) are an invaluable part of a team. We don't "just" work in aged care, we aren't (shouldn't) be given the aged care patients. The days when "nurse" fixed your sheets and did the showers, made the beds and so on are gone. I am regularly allocated seven or eight patients where I give all the drugs, do all the obs, do all the other cares for those pts through my shift. And may I say cope better than some RN's who like to have a nurse to do the little jobs. Stand up and be counted, I am at my facility and wouldn't be here if I weren't!

when you say "endorsed enrolled nurse" are you meaning division 2 nurses which used to be called enrolled nurses out here? div 2 nurses are able to undertake different tasks depending on which state you are in.

I think only Vic uses the term div 2 RN. Most other states use EN (or EEN as the case may be)

I'm not sure that anyone here has said that. I never worked in aged care as an EN. People who do work in that area just like in any other speciality area should have an interest in that field to give the best care.

As for administration of medications would you believe that is dependent on hospital policy? ENs in our hospital despite the fact that they are endorsed, are not permitted to give anything past a panadol. It is one of the reasons I did my RN...

But please don't have a go at RNs. There are bad apples on both side of the fence.

Are you serious!? Wow! what a waste of resources, I work in NSW and am fairly new to the game but I have yet to meet an EEN who is not used to give meds! That is really sad, so the time and effort, not to mention the cash that goes into training is wasted. What happens if they then move on to a facility where they are expected to give meds and they havn't had the experiance?BTW only said some RN's most of the others here run plenty of rings around me, believe me! LOL!

i would say that being in its early stages the een would be more inline to be placed in aged care facilities but in time they would migrate into acute areas of nursing

It was said by the way, two of us picked up on it..
