English trained RN wanting to move and nurse in California

Published

I am trying to find out how to go about registering as a nurse in California and would really appreciate some help. I have looked at different websites but none seem to have information on what exactly I need to do an in which order; for example do I need to do an English competency exam before I could sit the nclex and if I pass these what else would need to be done. I really want to move I have trained in england and have experience in critical care. If anyone knows any agency's that can help with the process I would be very grateful if you could pass on their details.

I'm not sure if you've already seen this thread....it's not new, but maybe there's something helpful in it?

You could also try calling the California BON, but good luck getting them to answer!

Unless you have a US SSN then you can not apply to California

Depending on how long ago you trained will depend on the process but be aware that both clinical and theory hours will be required on your transcripts in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult.

Also look up retrogression as you will be affected and many employers are not looking at hiring nurses requiring sponsorship due to the long wait (over 6 years) for you to get a immigrant visa allowing you to live and work in the US. This is more than likely due to the large numbers of unemployed nurses in the US.

I am not saying do not give up on your dreams of working in the US just be aware of the difficulties and long wait.
