English Requirement of CNO

Published

Hello everyone,

I am a IEN and completed all the requirement for RN registration in Ontario except the language proficiency. I got required scores in other sections of Ielts but unable to to achieve more than 6.5 in writing(The required score is 7). I also explore other option like CELBAN but there is no online preparation material for it. I found good resources for IELTS and CELBAN, however they are mostly in Toronto and I live in Ottawa. I was just wondering if anyone can help me with this because I don't have much time left to complete my registration requirement.

You are welcome, another online English tutorial is English for Health com, the nursing course contains 40 hours of instruction but unlike the other two I recommended, it is not free.

When will you be writing your exam?

I already wrote IELTS and waiting for the results. I am working so hard to complete this requirement and get my license. Now I am thinking to give one attempt of CELBAN too. There is one course for CELBAN preparation at CIMT college which is in Mississauga, however, I don't have any reviews for this course.

Are you an IEN?

Good luck with your IELTS results, hopefully your results are good and you will be finished the final steps to being registered with CNO.

If you are trying to determine if a school is qualified to provide training, check if the school is registered as a private college on the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities website. If the school is registered, they are held accountable by provincial law, for providing education content that meets provincial standards and for hiring qualified instructors. If they are not registered, be very aware that there is no recourse if they do not meet standards or the instructors are unqualified.

If you do need to study for the CELBAN and want a tutor to help you study, consider hiring a qualified, local, English tutor through the registry on the Teachers of English as a Second Language Association of Ontario website. TESL Ontario has a registry that lists accreditied instructors by location, (you can search by city). I believe the assessors for the CELBAN exam are accredited TESL instructors.

I am a Canadian educated nurse.

Hi ien.P,

I'm actually having the same problem with the language requirement. I'm also from Ottawa. I did take the IELTS for several times already and the last exam I took I did very good in all three areas except for the writing. I'm stuck always in 6.5 which makes me frustrated. Did you already took the CELBAN or you did pass the IELTS?

No I didn't take celban because I passed my Ielts.

Has anyone taken a non nursing course as one of the pre-requisite by CNO for the language proficiency ? If so, what is the name of the course?
