Encouragement?

Published

I graduate high school in a week (yay!). After becoming a CNA/job shadowing/hospital volunteering I have decided to purse Nursing as my major. I was admitted to the Early Admit BSN RN Program at a public 4 year university- therefore if I can maintain high pre-req grades, my spot In the program will be held for me.

I'm very excited!! Only one downer... My mom doesn't believe in me :/ She thinks I would be better majoring in something writing related? Nobody in any Of my close or immediate family is in healthcare (all are teachers or business )

Anybody ever been in the same boat? Advice on how to grin and bear it? :) I'm scared for the future!!

Don't listen to them. Your life, not theirs.

I am practically in the same boat. I had a college instructor who laughed at me when I told her I thought about becoming a nurse. I have a family member on occasion says that I'm best suited to something clerical rather than clinical. If you want this, you can do it!

Good luck :)

Thank you very much!! Sounds like you know where I'm comin from :)

I think a good support system is very helpful when you're going into nursing school - it will remind you why you started in the first place when you're ready to give up. However, it's your life, and you're the one who will have to live with the decisions you make. Don't do something just because others tell you to and end up miserably working at a job you hate but seek your own path. It would be great if your mom could support you with whatever decision you make, but it's not the end of the world if she doesn't. Be sure to surround yourself with friends and family who can support your decision and encourage you when times become tough. Good luck!

Thank you! I definitely have others that are supportive of me- I know a support system will be crucial :) you're totally right! I will choose my own path :)

This is your life and you need to do what will make you happy and not anyone else. You are the one that has to go to work every day in your chosen career. So as long as it makes you happy, go for it.

Amen!!! So true :) I'm going for it :)

Do what makes YOU happy. There are tons of people out there who are not happy with their job.

Exactly!!! I want a job that I don't dread everyday :)

Let me say I'm proud of you and it is good to see a young person, such as yourself, that has their mind set on what it is they want to go to college for and spend their lives doing. So many teenagers graduate high school and head off to college with no idea what they want to do or they are pursuing the dreams that their parents have set for them.

As a parent and father myself, we as parents (not all, but hopefully most) have dreams for our kids. Dreams of the things we would want our children to accomplish, but ultimately it is your life and your decision. That being said, let me offer you the same advice and encouragement that I have given to my own children (I have 5 btw). Follow you heart, pursue your dreams and do what makes you happy.

God Bless

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed to hear!!! You're so kind :) God bless!!

You are quite welcome!
