encopresis

I have several students, kindergarteners and first graders, with encopresis. One of my students may come in twice in a day for clothing change and help wiping. The problem I am encountering is that he sometimes comes in when I am busy with one of my 4 diabetics and don't really have the time to help him since sometimes he practically needs a bath. I have been dealing with this kid and family since September. We have tried bowel training with set times for him to sit but he always manages to not go during those times. I have spoken to the parents but it seems to me that they are not dealing with it since he only does it in school, he does not go at all at home. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation.

Thanks.

Would a pull-up or some type of disposable undergarment help with clean up until the encopresis is not an issue for him? That should eliminate the need for a complete clothing change w each visit.

I would do a medical referral just to rule out a medical diagnosis. I would also get my counselor involved. I think there are some psychosocial issues that need to be addressed for sure. Is he being bullied, has school avoidance issues, etc?

"We have tried bowel training ..." Does this mean the child has not had a complete workup? Encopresis is a complex disorder that requires a treatment plan. Agree that 1st step is a medical referral.
