im currently certified as a emt and thinking about getting into nursing. so far i thought about challenging the cna exam which i have some books and material to study for it so dont feel like taking a class is really necessary. this way i can begin hopefully working as a cna while i await to begin LPN school in march my question is does this sound like a good idea? any feedback will be appreciated

Seems like a good idea to me if you don't want to work as an emt while in nursing school. I am also working as a cna when I start LPN school. Good luck!

As I read your post, I am wondering what has motivated you to becoming an LPN?
I went to MA school before becoming an RN, and mean while, I worked as a CNA. It wasn't the best idea at the time--- but you live and you learn.
If I could do it allover again, I would have chosen LPN school first, then worked as LPN, then RN.
You don't like EMT?
You want to work in a nursing home??
just wondering:confused:

I think an EMT might be frustrated in the CNA role. CNAs do very basic patient care....bedmaking, tolieting, baths etc. If you work in the hospital you might be able to upgrade to PCT (patient care tech) and then you will be able to do fingersticks but really not much else. In the LTC/SNF that I work in the CNAs can only do TPR they aren't even allowed to do blood pressures.
I was a CNA before I became an LPN and I think that it's a very necessary job but it doesn't really represent what nursing is all about. Just go for your LPN and then get your RN from there if your interested.
hi bumble bee
sorry to confuse you, but to answer your question. emt is okay but i really wanna be a rn so im trying to decide how to go about it. i just got my emt certification so it hasnt been easy getting a job yet but im thinking about challenging the cna exam and like bx_rn2b said i would like to be a patient care tech. but like i said eventually i want to become a rn and since the cna doesnt seem too difficult im just gonna challenge the exam and put that under my belt.

I don't know if i would do the CNA to LPN unless you just can't find a job as an EMT. I did the EMT, EMT-I and then EMT-P several years ago. Worked at least a year at each level before advancing. Got good at the basics. Working as a CNA and an LPN didn't sound like much fun. The best money I ever spent was the money on nursing school though.
