EMT-B + STNA = ER Nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello:

I was told today that as a Nationally Registered EMT Basic and a State Tested Nursing Assistant, all I would need is certification in Meds Control (?) {i.e. ability to give medication} to be hired as an ER Nurse? Is this true?

Thanks for the help.

Most EMS workers wouldn't do well in a definitive care setting. James, RN, NREMT-P, soon to be NP

Hmm... I did really well (other than not really liking it of course). First year as a new grad in a busy ER I got employee of the month (and it was hospital wide) and precepted a new grad that became a successful ER nurse! Sounds like I did just fine. I have heard of MANY EMS providers doing great in nursing and other hospital based professions!

so a nurse in job, but not title?

Nope. You would be concidered and ER Tech, so doing all tasky type basic stuff. Ie getting patients up, getting them dressed/undressed, bed pans, stocking rooms, taking VS, doing EKGs, transporting non-monitored patients, and blood draws. No giving meds or doing assessments or procedures that nurses do. Some hospitals allow ER techs to do Foleys as well.
