Yeah - there is only a certain amount they will pay. I never took out a loan, but a friend did and she is still responsible for a large portion of her loan. So its definitely not as much of a perk as they make it seem, although it does help some. I'd contact the HR department of wherever you are looking to work and see exactly what they'll cover and what will still be your responsibility.
One of the reasons often given to support taking out loans and not working is that there are employers that will repay the loans. It is my understanding they are only reimbursing school expenses not loans to cover living expenses, right?
It is always best, to the extent possible to pay for things on your own, even if it means having to work. Most employers have a max on what they will pay back leaving you with the rest. No reason to give the govt $300+ every month for the next 20 years if you dont HAVE to!

I agree 100% and don't feel that working while I was in school hurt me one bit. :)
