Hi all,
I'm a new grad, currently in an intern program for a cardiac telemety unit. However, I came across a job listing for my hospital for a job in Emergency Services- Medical, Chest Pain or Trauma. The chest pain and trauma positions both required 3 years of experience, however the medical position did not require any. Does anyone else work in a hospital that splits their ER in this way? What goes on in the Medical ER? I really want to work in the ER, and would love to get my foot in the door without having to wait 3 years! Any suggestions??

I've never seen that, but I would jump at the chance. As an EMT I always preferred the medical cases over trauma or CP. I liked the "mystery" of what might be making them sick instead of just "they broke an arm." But that's just me.

Personally, I think it's a great idea! ER is great to start as a new grad-ours is broken up into medical, acute, urgent care and pediatrics. Our pediatrics is separate.
No one can be flow coordinator(director of flow at front door), or triage for one year. Urgent care nurses must wait for 3 months because of the flow-fast and furious. Acute care and medical are considered the same-WHICH I THINK IS CRAZY! Medical ER can go bad, but it's guarenteed in Acute-I just don't believe new nurses belong there without strong nurses around them.
We don't do trauma(unless necessary), but we are stroke, cardiac and BURN-that is more than enough some times.

The level I ER that I work in is split up in a somewhat similar way. We have a "Medical" side and a "Trauma/Surgical" side to the ER. You might see chest pain on the trauma side, but you will never see trauma on the medical side--well, I can't really say never. However, we all work both sides of the ER. Only certain nurses work trauma though. This is a common set up for a lot of your bigger ERs. If the ER is where your heart lies, I say go for it.
Thanks for the advice guys. I'm definitely going to check into it, doesn't hurt to try!!
