electronic devices during tests

Hi all,

the nursing faculty at my school are evaluating different consequences for students who keep there cellphones (or other devices) turned on and on their person during exams. Any input is appreciated.

I have it in my syllabus that if a cell phone goes off during an exam, the person will be asked to leave and their test time is done. I also patrol the room and tabletops may only have the test, pencils, a school-supplied calculator, and a highlighter on them. All book bags must be at the front or back of the room, clothing zipped to the top of the zipper, no hats or sunglasses...

I also have that in my syllabus. But on top of that, they also start losing points per instructors discretion. I've told them I don't want to see them or hear them. At all. They are dismissed from class. During clinical, if they are spotted with a cell phone, they are sent home and they have to repeat that clinical day at the discretion of the clinical instructor.

Only an aspiring nurse educator skulking around here...but,

We had a policy that all cell phones and tablets were deposited on the instructor's desk prior to a test in addition to taking all your stuff to he front of the room. One by one we walked up to drop off our phones and if you claimed to not have one on you, you had to turn out your pockets.

Cell phones aren't allowed (for students) at my clinical site. Any student seen with one, off or on, is asked to go home.

I can imagine a dozen phones ringing and buzzing repeatedly sitting on the desk.

Just set the rules, turn them off and put them in your bag or on the desk. Then, if it rings...your out.

I agree...ridiculous. All the phones were required to be shut off though
