Our manager thinks meetings are the only way to get things done...we usually spend 7/8 of the meeting listening to her or other manager type folks...at our next meeting I want to try to make a suggestion to give the meetings back to the staff ...trusting us to accomplish our own goals for that particular group. Is this unrealistic...do staff nurses anywhere have any control?

I suggest you approach her before the meeting with your suggestion. Management uses (or should use) meetings to communicate & update their staff on certain issues. I doubt that that part will go away...but perhaps you could arrange to "own" part of the agenda.

Doing it this way tells your manager that you'd like to be more involved, but aren't taking over "her" meeting. And...approaching her in private before the fact, you're showing respect by not putting her on the spot in front of the entire staff.

I think it's awesome that the staff wants to have more involvment. Good luck to your department!

We are about to start a nurse practice committee in our ED-never had this before, but our management has suggested it. There is a chair, co chair and 9 members from the ED staff to discuss, handle, and decide on the nursing practice in the ED. This will give us a voice, and have staff very much involved in the ED. Our director is very open to staff involvement. If you have any questions, please feel free!
