ED RN looking to join the military

I am just in the researching part now but very interested to read what everyone has to say about Navy vs AF; going to school for CNA; and pay differences, etc! Thanks in advance for your help and guidance!

Dam AF guys. My reference to a "gun" is another reason why when in the field, us Navy nurses stick close to the Marines. That way we will come home, with our gun and weapon intact, HA-HA!!

Hey Corvette Guy,

I'm prior enlisted (AF) 8 years, now an ADN RN in a busy ED. I'm presently getting my packet ready for the commissioning board, but I have to go to MEPS first for the physical. I'm excited to join. There isn't a reserve M5 position here in Phoenix, so my recruiter said he'd assign me to a Combat Support Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. And I have absolutely no problem with deploying. Any help, suggestions, information, or insights would be great, if you have the time. Oh, also any help with what to expect at OBC as well. I've been to the website already.

  1. Are you planning on an RN-BSN program in the future? You won't see MAJ w/o BSN.
  2. Your going to drive from Phoenix, AZ to Salt Lake, UT once a month for Battle Assembly [no longer called Drill weekend, LOL]?
  3. The 2 week OBC is not the least bit taxing physically. However, be prepared to do a lot of studying on your off time, which is plenty except during FTX. BTW, I enjoyed FTX, too. In fact, I was a Squad Leader at OBC and really enjoyed the entire experience.

I agree w/Corvette guy. If you have a goal of long-term military career, do plan on a BSN in the near future, and preferably, an MSN later on. Promotions depend on advancing your education!
