I graduated end of March '10, sat for boards beginning of May '10 and passed! I didn't realize how tough it would be to find a new grad position close to home!
I live in California (Bay Area) so I have probably an additional strike against me in finding a new grad position. I sent out over 200 applications; physically drove from hospital to hospital to drop off my resume; and even made phone calls. It was frustrating because many of the hospitals in the Bay Area won't take a hard copy- they ask that you apply online because everything is automated.
The bay area is saturated with new grad RN's and the recruiters are being bombarded with not hundreds but try 400-700 applications!
I revamped my resume several times and managed to land an interview at a hospital an hour away from home! Anyway- after 4 interviews I got the call and they are making me an offer! It's my dream position and allows me to straight shoot into ICU! It's an ICU new grad position and night shifts (yay- I'm a night owl).
Good luck to everyone out there and don't give up! A good tip my mentor told me was to keep my resume to 1 page as a new grad! Move up your credentials and education to the top of the page rather than listing your experience. Recruiters know that you're a new grad and expects that we have the fundamentals; i.e., insert iv, insert ng tube; take vitals; pain assessment- well you get the idea! YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIST ALL THAT! Keep it simple and concise! Remember that these recruiters are sifting through hundreds and hundreds of resumes!
Good luck and I pray that more new grad programs open up in the Bay Area!

Congratulations on your new job:yeah:
As per the new grad resume, i'm in the process of reducing mine to 1 page, the bulk of it is clinical rotation experience/skills, if i do not list skills what do you suggest i include since i do not have any other experience. pls give some examples/tips

Congratulations!!! I guess things are getting better for new grads! I just got a job too. I'm in Miami, Florida and the job market here has been terrible as well. I graduated Dec 2009! I just got a job offer this past Friday after hundreds of applications! I'll be working nights too, on a Telemetry/Diabetes floor. :yeah:As a matter of fact, I just got home from the hospital doing all the pre-employment physicals, paperwork, etc. It all seems like a dream. As I filled out the papers I looked at the top of the form and the job title had "Registered Nurse" in bold letters! WOW! I will never forget this feeling that I'm feeling!:redbeathe Yayy us!!!
