East Los Angeles College ADN (ELAC) Spring 2024

Published

Hi everyone!

I didn't see any discussion for those of us applying to ELAC Spring 2024 so I just wanted to start one!

Has anyone heard back or know when we will be hearing back, and if so do you mind sharing your points? Good luck to everyone, may we all get the chance to become the compassionate nurses the world needs!

Hi! Is this a "nurses eat their young" program? Or do you feel instructors are fair and supportive?  Are the exams fair? Thank you!

hey for everyone on here. im studying for exams but I will be back to answer any questions you might have for the program. please do your due diligence and look at every program you can apply to. unless you know how to study on your own I would not make ELAC your first choice.

for example: for your first exam you'll need to read 8 to 10 chapters. no study guide, no teacher guidance on what to study for. they'll tell you that the objectives in your syllabus is everything you need to know. that is a lie. the teachers lecture and maybe a few things that they mention from their lectures on the exam. if you ask the teachers what you need to specifically focus on. they'll say things like "whatever I lectured on" your really on your own despite being told otherwise.

ill be back in a few weeks to answer any in depth questions you might have. if you attend orientation and get to talk to some of the 2nd semester students and are surprised that they don't tell you much about how the program is. It's because they're scared to tell you the truth. but press the teachers and the director to answer any tough questions you might have for the program.

As students you will have exams fall on the same day. for example this next week their are two ATI exams due followed by exam 3 for med surg.

exams are not fair, in the sense that you really don't know what to focus or study on.

------------------------- -teacher - is nice, but niceness does nothing for me if she cant help me with what I need to pass the class.

Make a list of hard questions to ask the teachers and director for orientations.

Thank you for sharing that! I'm currently in a constant state of anxiety waiting for schools to respond LOL. I am a little worried since my scores aren't all that competitive. I'm only applying with 49 points. I have a 3.3 science GPA and a 3.1 overall GPA. I got a 79.8 on the TEAS. I have no previous work/volunteer experience.

I didn't have any work or volunteer experience either and I got in. I think you'll be fine. if you didn't get picked first time you might get in second time. Alot of students dropped from the first orientation and went to other schools that they got accepted too. By the time we had the 3rd orientation their was a whole different group who was accepted into the program.

Has anyone gotten an email about being an alternate?

Congrats on getting into ELAC's program! If you don't mind me asking, how do you like the program so far? I'm trying to get more insight into what the program is like. Thanks!

Hi, I don't like how the program is structured at ELAC. They set their students up to fail, and it seems like they try to weed out those who don't know how to study. I replied to another person on here. feel free to read that. I'll be back in a couple weeks to answer more in depth questions you might have.

Insight: its up to you to teach yourself everything that is assigned to you. the teachers literally lecture from the book. they read sections from the book as they go. the lectures do not match what is on the exams. you have to learn everything and I mean everything from all chapters assigned without a study guide, or teacher guidance. Powerpoint slides are literally the book headlines copied and pasted. if you ask the teachers on what to study they say things like study the objectives but not one of those things was on the test.

The exam questions are mostly are critical thinking questions. don't expect more than 2 or 3 fact based questions on the test. for your first two exam for the first two classes you'll have to read at least 8 to 10 chapters in each class, again with no guidance on what to focus on. some of these chapters are 30 to 40 pages long. 4 people have dropped on their own. only 6 students have A's or B's everyone else is hanging on by a thread.

If you attend their orientation, please come prepared to ask them hard questions about what the program will be like. Try no to be vague.

For example, other schools will space out your exams. I've had two exams from the two separate classes fall on the same day. this next week I'm studying for the medsurg comprehensive final, ATI pharm proctored exam, and the ATI med surg proctored exam.

Teachers have not assigned specific pages or chapters for what to study on for the ATI exams.

Teachers will openly say you won't know everything that there is to know on the ATI because the pharm class doesn't cover it all because its only a 1.5 unit class. They promise scholarship, grant opportunities.

I've only heard of 2 that I can apply for since I've been there and no one has gotten a scholarship yet. If you are typically an A student and you've mastered how to study and how it works for you. I would say accept ELAC, if you're able to teach yourself. If you rely on teachers to help you learn things as you go. you will fail. you will need to learn what works for you.

oh! and you also have powerpoint presentations due for each class. Not graded, but you would hope so considering it would help give you extra points.

Ill be back to answer more questions in about 2 or 3 weeks or when I get a chance.

Is anyone else still waiting to hear back? I haven't received a rejection email or anything.

Before accepting your admittance to the ELAC program I would look at the ELAC newspaper with the link I've attached, https://elaccampusnews.com/2023/10/18/students-complain-about-nursing-department-amid-transitions/ There is said to be another newsletter coming out tomorrow unveiling more unsatisfactory remarks about the program. I am not trying to scare you away. Im just providing you with information that may make you decide to go to a different program.

For any who have applied or are thinking about applying to ELACS  program, here is another newsletter explaining just what goes on in the program. https://elaccampusnews.com/2023/12/06/filed-grievance-causes-stir-in-nursing-deparment/

Does anybody have any questions about the program that I can answer? I am a first semester student at ELAC. Feel free to ask me anything.
