Duquesne CRNA 2022 start

Nursing Students SRNA

Anyone on here applied to or got accepted at Duquesne/Allegheny School of Anesthesia?

During the interview they explained that the anesthesia classes offered directly through Allegheny will be in person, while the Duquesne classes will be a mix of desynchronous and synchronous courses through the school of medicine and school of nursing, with eventually some in person classes through Duquesne as well. So, was curious how people felt about the hybrid of online, in person and across multiple institutions.

During my interview I was not informed about possible classes with the school of medicine which sound pretty unique. I do believe the medical school won't open until 2024. I was told most of the DNP courses would be online which a lot of other CRNA programs do as well. I would definitely like to hear from current students about how their experience has been.

For those who are currently enrolled in the program, how do you like it?

I was offered a seat in the 2023 class, but am apprehensive about the hybrid model, and was curious about current students experiences. Thanks!

How was your interview was it really 3 hours. What type of question did they ask. I was informed it was hybrid as well and I wouldn't have to live in PA for the first year .

The interview really was just shy of 3.5 hours. It was largely clinical questions. I think there was maybe, two emotional intelligence questions. But, everything else was pure CCRN content functionally.

You might be able to get away not being in state the first semester as only one class is in person from my understanding, so really depends on your tolerance to drive into the city once a week at keast; however this isn't a didactic front loaded program, so I think you start clinicals in the second or maybe third semester which would force you to move closer I think.

Appreciate the quick response. I have a interview coming up. Just wanted to know which direction to prepare. Hopefully we can be classmates. Let's knock this thing out. Not looking fwd to 3.5 hours though LOL. Did they tell you if u got in after a week?

Specializes in surgical-trauma ICU.

I'm currently in the program. It is blended and not front loaded. Anesthesia class is once a week and the DNP nursing classes are online. The program is a merger of three schools: Allegheny School of Anesthesia (ASOA), Duquesne School of Nursing, and Duquesne's Rangos School of Health Sciences. The health science classes thus far have been taught by Dr Calhoun, a surgical PA by trade. This semester we also have started our anatomy lab which includes cadaver dissection which has been a great experience!

All anesthesia is taught @ ASOA by Drs. Davison and Vrescak. Dr Neft (a CRNA) is the anesthesia head over at the Duquesne side. He and other professors (not CRNAs) teach the nursing/science courses and attempt to relate it to CRNAs specifically.

Regarding clinical. We started in January (beginning of the second semester). That aspect has been nice because at this point we are already very comfortable with the clinical setting and getting our skills down. The anesthesia coorifice load can be intense and you will have back-to-back exams with some other classes while also writing essays for others, but it's manageable if you put in the time.

As far as living out of state, I don't recommend it because once clinical starts second semester along with other classes, it won't be feasible. Unless you're able to commute. All members of my cohort who are not from Pittsburgh have relocated here for the program.

Hope this helps and looking forward to meeting y'all!

I have PA experience, but I wasn't asked about a specific number, or really even brought up in my interview. Was this something they asked about after you accepted?
