Dumb question

Nurses in my hospital work the typical 3 12 hour shifts, do they get paid for 40 hours or 36 hours?

the three different psych hospitals where i worked 12 hour shifts, paid as though i had worked 40 hours. i worked 7 pm --> 7 am

at two hospitals and 6 pm --> 6 am at the third. i am insured under my husband's plan but could have had fulltime benefits too.
