Can anyone tell me whether or not someone has to live close enough to Duke to do clinicals in the Durham area? I am so interested in Duke's distance ed program, but I live in WI and would need to do clinicals near my home town. I have no problem with setting them up myself if that is acceptable.
Can anyone tell me anything about this program?

Their website says that you must do clinicals in their area. They will occasionally allow clinicals in "nearby" states. That is how I interpreted their information.

Agreed--I asked about their program awhile ago, and they said that they very rarely accept out of state students...
I emailed the admissions guy and asked him if they will accept students in other states (I told him I lived in WI), and he said that was no problem since WI is a "low risk state" (not sure what that means?), but that the decision ultimately lies with the faculty members when they review your application. He made it sound like it wasn't usually an issue, though. I am confused! The website definitely makes it sound like you need to be in or near NC, but that conflicts with what the admissions rep said.
Hmmmmm.....
What is a low risk state?! Maybe MD is a high risk state? I can't remember if I told them where I was from or not?? I'll be calling them again tomorrow to see if I get the same answer again and then I'll repost. Thanks for the update Sydney!
I understood that you can do the entire program online, but must do the clinical portion in NC. So, no setting up clinicals in your own area. I am from Texas.... not sure if that is a "high risk" state or not. I think I will call as well and see what I get!
PLease let me know what you find out!
I re-checked the email from the admissions rep and this is exactly what it said:
Me: How do clinicals work for students who do not live in North Carolina? Is it possible to complete this program while living out of state?
Duke guy: Yes. The clinicals are set up on an individual basis for out of state students. You would need to be in a state that has agreements with Duke.
Me: How do I know if I live in a state that has an agreement with Duke? I live in WI.
Duke guy: Wisconsin is not a high risk state, so it should be fine. It would be determined by the faculty however. You would need to apply and have your file reviewed by the faculty so that they could make the determination.
So I am still puzzled by the whole thing....
I am interested in hearing what everyone else finds out!
Bumping this up....
Has anyone found anything else out about this?

I spoke with one of the faculty via phone a while ago. I live in maryland, and she said that wasn't a problem to do my clinicals in MD and commute to campus only for the required few days, ect, with my classes online. I was very, very interested in the program. Unfortunately, finances won out, and I chose an instate school that was a quarter of the cost. Best of luck with Duke, though. Still my dream place to work/ go to school-- lemme know what they end up telling you : )
I emailed admissions regarding the clinical portion of the program and the location of clinicals. Received an email back directing me to the website (that I have already read a thousand times) and advising that someone would be contacting me soon. That was over a week ago and I haven't heard anything else. So, still not sure how the clinical portion is handled or if I am in an "at risk state".
