Duke Hospital

Published

Hey-- i have an interview at duke for a floor position. Does anyone currently work for duke or have any experience with the hospital? Also, what's the new grad pay rate? thanks...

also!! whats the real estate like there? thanks in advance!

anyone.......?

I haven't worked for duke but i can tell you it is a great teaching hospital. My daughter actually had an appointment there today. She has a heart murmur(sp). Also if you want to live close to duke and not live in durham. Check out the surrounding cities. Like a little town called creedmoor. If you need any info on it let me know. I live in this area.

Specializes in Neuro.

Duke is a great hospital to work at. Pay is about $20/hour new grad not including shift diffs. Chapel Hill is nearby and is a great place to live but is expensive. Durham has high crime/gangs, need to know where to live if going to live there. I worked at Duke for my med-surg, psych, and maternity rotations. I enjoyed all of my experiences. It is a private hospital, all supplies in pyxis', etc. Is considered one of the top hospitals. I would definitely work there.

Durham is a great place to live, I have been here for 5 years. There are great neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods just like every town. The downtown area is being revived, we have great restaurants, baseball, new performing arts center and a great farmers markets.

also home prices are more affordable than the surrounding areas

love duke and durham

I've worked at Duke and find it to be okay. Just OKAY. It's got the supplies, technology and reputation. I'll give them that. But as far as pay, they're the lowest paying hospital in the area. That still shocks me! And I'm not talking about $1 or 2. Ask them what their weekend differential is and then call UNC or Wake Med and ask them what theirs are. You'll be surprised. I know it's not all about money but if you owe Sallie Mae your right arm like I do, or have real bills, this is important. Also, depending on the unit you land on, you may feel as if you landed in another time zone. I worked on Land D and in the space of 3 mos, the unit lost 20 RNs. No one batted an eyelash. What does that say to you? Anyway, I put in my contracted 2 yrs and kindly escaped to UNC where I have been most happy.

Also, I am a transplant here in NC. I relocated here 3 yrs ago and was fed the same 'avoid Durham' because of its gangs/crime, etc... non-sense. Show me a big city or a small town that has NO crime. I've lived many places and worked as a travel nurse for 5 yrs before settling here. Trust this - Durham is a pretty awesome place to live. You want nightlife? Got it. Theater and arts? Got it. Education? Top notch universities abound. There are tons of private schools and awesome Magnet schools (public) for your children if you have any. My children are at Club Blvd Elementary and Morehead Montes. and I am very satisfied. We have numerous parks, bike trails, walking trails, festivals, markets, great shopping (Southpoint mall), gardens (Duke Gardens), great churches, tons of restaurants, etc... As for work, you'll be centrally locted to Duke, Durham Regional Hosp, UNC, Rex and Wake Med. I am a New Yorker and when I tell you I LOVE DURHAM (NC as a whole), it says a LOT.

station nine

next to a duke bus route h3 & h5 that go to the hospital & within biking or walking distance. many people walk from the duke parking lot next to station nine to get to the hospital. this is also within the hospital safe rides area so if the buses are not running there is transportation 24/7. my friends there never mentioned undergrads living there but you'll have to call the apt to find out. they fill up early.

the lofts at lakeview

http://www.loftsatlakeview.com/

closest apts. to the hospital- 1/4 mile so many people walk or ride bikes. there is one bus h5 that stops near the lofts. also within hospital safe rides area. i heard they allowed some undergrads to move in one section recently so make sure you are not placed in apt. near them.

colonial village- deerfield

if they are looking for a little cheaper or a little further way from the hospital there are a lot of hospital staff/students that live at deerfield. i found deerfield on an online med school suggestion list for housing. it's a little older though & backs up to duke forest. if they don't like nature or have bad allergies probably not the right place. unless you take the city bus or bike to the hospital you'll have to drive to a parking lot then take the duke bus or walk to the hospital.

as for renting houses it's hard to tell online what the neighborhoods are really like so i wouldn't sign a contract without visiting the neighborhood.

duke mba student website: http://www.llrice.com/duke/apartments.htm

when i was looking for housing there were a couple of websites or group pages by medical and nursing students with housing suggestions but the links i used no longer exist.

duke parking & transportation can tell you which parking lot you would probably end up in if you purchase a parking pass.

there are some apts on lasalle drive, campus walk and morreen road. despite their proximity to the hospital

there have been security issues in multiple complexes including duke manor, the belmont, campus walk & georgetown manor.

Check out the Watts-Hillendale area, north of West Club Ave. It's gorgeous, and people stick here for generations. Plus it's only a mile, roughly, north of Duke. You can even walk it.
