Duke ABSN Spring 2011

Published

Hi there-

My name is Sandy and I am applying to the Duke ABSN for Spring 2011, just wondering if there is anyone else out there applying? Only 2 months till the deadline and I am trying to get my personal statement finished, as well as spiffy up my resume!

I think I am anxious already! This may be a long ride!

Anyway....a little about me...

I have a BS in Environmental Management with a 3.73 GPA, didn't take the GRE, still working on the prerequisites but so far have a 4.0 in those classes.

I spent 10 years in the Navy, working as an aviation electronics technician and supervisor. Also did hazardous material control and other environmental stuff for my command. I also taught CPR for 5 or so years, as well as blood drive coordination. I was able to travel to a lot of neat places, and some that weren't! All-in-all it was a great experience for me. After leaving the military in late 2007, I worked for a semi-conductor company in RTP, doing research and development (not my favorite job). So, I decided to go to school for massage therapy, and I'm now a licensed therapist. So, that makes me something like 34 years young.

So, here I am....wanting to pursue a dream that I have had for long time! Thankfully I have the world's greatest husband! He is my rock and has encouraged me to take this leap! So let's do this!

I'm waiting for you! Hopefully someone will be here soon to go crazy in anticipation with me! :)

not yet am about to fill it out now... thsi sucks i really want to attend duke but i have no cosigner.. am just gonna keep praying and hope for the best.. also start applying to another program just in case. someone said to try citibank so i think ill do that next

i hope everything works out for you! i'm going to apply to another program as well! if i'm not at duke, i will definitely be in nursing school somewhere! keep me posted!

thanks and good luck to you too.. but definitely try citi bank and sallimae and hopefully they will work out.. also my alternative loan amount for spring and summer was 32000 so when u apply make sure you only apply for that amount. then we reapply for the last two semesters at the end of next year. where do u currently live?

I am going to try both of those for private loans. Mine was 34,000. So, I will definitely only be applying for that amount. I currently live in MD. Where do you live?

omg. i live in baltimore md...ohhh we should meet up....:). good to know am not heading to duke alone..lol

Hey guys,

I found an answer to my question and I just wanted to update you. We do NOT have to have the background check completed until November 1. If you're in the same boat I am and don't have any $$ to spare, you can put it off until then.

I personally am struggling with getting approved for loans as well. I know its very stressful and difficult. I'm trying to keep my chin up. Good luck to all of us. I'm sure something will work out. :)

@NMWayah, yes, we should definitely meet up! i'm not too far from you. i live in greenbelt. i will pm you my info. @YogiMel, thanks for the info. I am going to put this off for as long as I can...

hey.. we should meet up one day.....so how do we exchange info on this thing or r u on the facebook group?

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh someone help...i lack credit/ lack a good cosigner...am really nervous now.. i really want to go to duke but i cant get the funding..any suggestions?

I actually just gave up my spot b/c I couldn't get enough financial aid. I got a tiny grant ($600) and needed $34,000 in private loans. I couldn't get approved for loans because I had some bad things on my credit report, even though I had a decent cosigner. Good luck everyone!! I'm still hoping to get into UNC - maybe I could swing a smaller loan. Anyway, Good luck to everyone!

NMWayah, I do have Facebook. I will try to send you a private message.

Yogi Mel,

I am so sorry to hear that you gave up your spot...I am still searching for loans. I have applied for 5 or 6 and didn't get approved because of my credit and I had a cosigner as well. I am in the process of seeing if I can get another person to cosign the loan. If I don't get the loan by the end of the month, I am going to give up my spot as well...So, you may see me at UNC:)...Good luck to you!
