Hi there-
My name is Sandy and I am applying to the Duke ABSN for Spring 2011, just wondering if there is anyone else out there applying? Only 2 months till the deadline and I am trying to get my personal statement finished, as well as spiffy up my resume!
I think I am anxious already! This may be a long ride!
Anyway....a little about me...
I have a BS in Environmental Management with a 3.73 GPA, didn't take the GRE, still working on the prerequisites but so far have a 4.0 in those classes.
I spent 10 years in the Navy, working as an aviation electronics technician and supervisor. Also did hazardous material control and other environmental stuff for my command. I also taught CPR for 5 or so years, as well as blood drive coordination. I was able to travel to a lot of neat places, and some that weren't! All-in-all it was a great experience for me. After leaving the military in late 2007, I worked for a semi-conductor company in RTP, doing research and development (not my favorite job). So, I decided to go to school for massage therapy, and I'm now a licensed therapist. So, that makes me something like 34 years young.
So, here I am....wanting to pursue a dream that I have had for long time! Thankfully I have the world's greatest husband! He is my rock and has encouraged me to take this leap! So let's do this!
I'm waiting for you! Hopefully someone will be here soon to go crazy in anticipation with me! :)
Is anyone else having EXTREME difficulty getting in touch with the financial aid office? I'd say that's the one thing I really haven't been too pleased with. I'm excited about going to Duke, but I have not had any of my phone calls or emails returned...and I really need to start planning on how I'm going to pay for school.
So, I had to check my status this morning to make sure it hasn't changed LOL! Had to verify that yesterday wasn't a dream!
Bludevil- I hear ya about the financial aid...so hard to get ahold of. I know they must be busy, but the aid is such a big factor for all of us! Twois said they do usually manage to get everyone the help they need, so it helps a little knowing that. None-the-less, that is my new source of anxiety!
NM- Hi and congrats! What part of MD are you from? I was born and raised in the Carroll & Baltimore counties area. Haven't been back there in many years though!
Haha I rechecked mine too. I woke up and thought "oh God, what if they made a mistake and took it back?!" checked immediately. I have to do a great hunt for my dept of education pin # tonight to try and get my fafsa filled out. Does the government give money to people getting a second bachelors?
Congratulations everyone! I was waitlisted, so I'm hoping this post will start some discussion about the waitlist. I'm still super excited that I was at least waitlisted! Yay! From reading past posts it seems like they get through a fair amount of the waitlist. I called today, but they still have not come out with the waitlist rankings. Hopefully we can get those soon! Does anyone know when UNC makes their Spring 2011 decisions? I'm sure that will also be a factor in people's decisions to accept or decline Duke's admissions offer.
Just wanted to ask,
Did everyone take the recommended courses of Nutrition and Developmental Psych? I just finished Nutrition, and was planning to take Developmental Psych in the Fall, but now I am thinking I may not...I think I'll be moving during that time which would make it complicated, and I'm also trying to save money. I did put on my application though that I planned to take it, does this mean I have to?
Anyone else in a similar situation?
I made a facebook groupI hope this link works
How many of you have joined the facebook page? I was just trying to put a face to the name.
I am still so excited :)
Pammy, a friend of mine got waitlisted last semester, and she actually made it in, so there is still a chance.
I also spoke with a few during the interviews who were hoping to get into UNC, and like you said, they would be happy to loose $500 to go there, as it is a 1/10th of the price of Duke (if they get in-state tuition)!

Hi NM,
Welcome! I'm Nicole. I'm also worried about funding and plan on mostly just taking out private loans after I exhaust my FAFSA resources. It is alot of money but I'm comforted by the fact that I'm investing in my future, getting educated by an amazing school with a great reputation, and will get to soon meet all of you fine people and have new friends! I'm currently in Philadelphia, PA. I believe someone set up a facebook group too. I just joined. It's under Melanie Nicole.
