Hi there-
My name is Sandy and I am applying to the Duke ABSN for Spring 2011, just wondering if there is anyone else out there applying? Only 2 months till the deadline and I am trying to get my personal statement finished, as well as spiffy up my resume!
I think I am anxious already! This may be a long ride!
Anyway....a little about me...
I have a BS in Environmental Management with a 3.73 GPA, didn't take the GRE, still working on the prerequisites but so far have a 4.0 in those classes.
I spent 10 years in the Navy, working as an aviation electronics technician and supervisor. Also did hazardous material control and other environmental stuff for my command. I also taught CPR for 5 or so years, as well as blood drive coordination. I was able to travel to a lot of neat places, and some that weren't! All-in-all it was a great experience for me. After leaving the military in late 2007, I worked for a semi-conductor company in RTP, doing research and development (not my favorite job). So, I decided to go to school for massage therapy, and I'm now a licensed therapist. So, that makes me something like 34 years young.
So, here I am....wanting to pursue a dream that I have had for long time! Thankfully I have the world's greatest husband! He is my rock and has encouraged me to take this leap! So let's do this!
I'm waiting for you! Hopefully someone will be here soon to go crazy in anticipation with me! :)
I currently live in Philadelphia but I have a friend who is from NC and told me to move to Chapel Hill. Does anyone have any advice on this? Since the program is so fast-paced i was wondering if it would be best to move right by the school/hospital for quick access. Any thoughts? Also, is it true that graduating from the ABSN program guarantees employment at Dukes Hospitals? If that is the case then WOW this is a deal. I'm really excited. God what a weight off to finally feel like all my hard work has paid off!

Chapel Hill is 7+ miles from campus and the main corridor between the two is a nightmare at anything remotely resembling peak traffic time. The rest of NC seems terrified of Durham but it's actually quite a fantastic little city, the crime rates are far lower than they used to be, and there's no reason to fear living here. (I live right on the edge of campus and I'm SO glad I'll be able to bike or bus to class. Everyone else is going to have to fight morning traffic and park in an overflow lot about half a mile from the building. )
And no, graduating is not a guarantee. Jobs are scarcer than before and while they do hire ABSN graduates first/predominantly, there are not enough jobs for everyone. The class that graduated in December did not all get hired (and the girl from that class that I talked to from that group said they were only allowed to apply for one position! YIKES!). But a LOT of them do - a lot more than other schools/hospitals.

Teapot-
I live in Raleigh, so I don't know much about the Durham and Chapel Hill areas. I kinda wish I could move near the school for closer access, but the clinical sites are all over the area. So, you may be close to some and far from others. I'm hoping to find some other people in Raleigh who might want to carpool!
As far as a guarantee of employment, I don't believe that is the case. However, I do believe that we have a hands up to gaining employment with Duke and if you can get a position...the reimbursement program is phenomenal!
I'm glad there will be another Texan, too! I've heard Arlington is a pretty cool place, though I've never been there myself. There were actually a lot of Texans at Duke when I went there for undergrad, and North Carolina is such a friendly place that I felt right at home :). Florida's okay, I miss living in a town with more young people and a lot more going on...Durham was a great place to go to college! As for whoever asked about living in Chapel Hill, the cost of living is a LOT higher there and transportation would be kind of a bummer (there's a free bus called the Robertson bus that goes between UNC and Duke on the half hour, but it's not really super convenient). I can't WAIT to be back in North Carolina, I couldn't be more excited to be joining you all this Spring!!!!!!
Is anyone taking a Micro class online???? Or know of one??M just told me that it would be best if I could do the class in the US so I wouldn't have to get it accredited AFTER I take it.
I took Micro online at Ocean County College. It's a little pricey (you need to buy a microscope and lab kit, in addition to the class fees), but super easy to register as a visiting student!! You can fax in the application with unofficial transcripts to enroll! Hopefully they still have openings.
Here's the website for info on the course:
I've been moving all week and I finally had my inspection this afternoon, but I was too chicken to check b/c if i didn't get in I wouldn't have the will to finish moving out & cleaning. I just got home. I'm IN!!! Now I'm using the crazy Smilie:dancgrp: Congrats Everyone! Hugs to those who didn't. It has taken me 3 tries...
