Dream sheet wisdom needed

Greetings!

I am former Army (21B) going into the Navy NCP this fall. My wife and I are trying to decide on our dream sheet for overseas stationing. I am hoping for San Diego for the first duty station, but I will go wherever the Navy needs (anywhere is better than Fort Leonard Wood). We would like to go overseas for our second post. My son and I want somewhere in Japan and my wife wants Italy or the UK. Has anyone on the boards had experience with bases in those regions? Also, is it possible to get stationed in Diego Garcia with dependents?

Thanks

Ok so...San Diego is a good choice for your 1st duty station, and you won't have any problems getting it.

Also, it's really easy to get Japan for your 2nd duty station afterwords. However, it is harder to get to Europe from the west coast, but it happens. It just depends on the needs of the navy at the time. Itay is possible (depending on the needs) but UK for nurses....rarley ever happens.

And no dependants in Diego Garcia.

Hope this helps...excuse me if it's a little jumbled I'm on night shift right now.

Hopefully when you are picking your first duty station it won't be at the end of the fiscal year. I was told Portsmouth was the only duty station available for me. I thought I wanted San Diego, but after visiting Portsmouth, I love it. So it all worked out :)

I can tell you from 1st hand accounts....we always need nurses at NMCSD. So I don't know why they told you that it matter what time of the year it was...

Just my 2 cents!

Hello,

Do Navy nurses end up working lots of extra shift? I know there isn't any overtime pay (since nurses aren't paid hourly), but I'm just wondering about the quality of life. I work nights now, and need my time off to rest. We are constantly understaffed and I receive phone calls every day to come in and work. Luckily I can say no, but I know I won't be able to in the military. I'm just wondering how demanding the schedule is for new navy nurses. Thanks

That's interesting. My detailer said it was full for now and that Portsmouth was my only option. Oh well! No biggie :)

That's may be the silliest thing I've heard a detailer say....we are never "full" for nurses....espeically with deployments and all the nurses PCS right now. Oh well...at least you like where you are now.

So it turned out good for you.

possible it is simply case of the Navy having a greater shortage in other locations, so has closed incoming slots for your location...that would make sense to me anyway.

Where else would you all recommend as a first duty station in the states? I put down Flordia and Virginia didn't put particular station due to recruiter said to stay open. Any suggestions for any more?

I think lifeafter40 has it right...I think that was the reason. I probably worded it wrong on here. But who knows. This has been the longest ordeal to even get in, so I could care less where they send me! :) Plus my husband still has a year in Charleston, so me living in Virginia is probably better than San Diego!
