Dorothea Hopfer VS BronxCC VS Hostos

Published

Hello everyone, i was hoping to get some insight on the schools that I am interested in.

I'd pursuing my associates in nursing and graduating to be an RN, the following colleges are the ones that have interested me.

Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, and Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing.

BMCC i've heard you must have a 3.9 GPA to apply and its really tough to get in, Bronx CC i've heard horror stories about the faculty, Hostos isn't accredited, which makes me the most interested in Hopfer.

Can anyone give me some insight on this or on these schools?

Hopfer looks the most appealing to me because I already have all of the prerequisites to start in August while the Community Colleges I'd need to take at least 1..maybe 2 semesters worth of prereqs. It'd be my ideal school also because it goes well with my work schedule and you finish in 4 semesters with their program. If I don't get in there I hope I would've been accepted to BCC or Hostos (especially considering that I live in the bronx).

Does anyone have experience at these schools?

Also are there any other schools you'd reccomend in the Manhattan, Bronx area (Accessible by public transport).

Lastly, what may be the problems you could face graduating from a non-accredited school?

Thanks so much for reading this and for your time.

If anyone is also able to reach out to me personally I'd love to ask some questions or chat more about this!

No problem! I know how much guidance I needed when I was first getting started so I try to do the same for others. This is my first semester at Hopfer so I won't be done until December of 2011. It's a long journey but well worth it. Good luck!

Oh know this is bad news. i was planning on applying to hopfer for fall 2010.

I hope they're not really closing down...

MissBronx do you think it was really competitive to get into hopfer?

We were recently assured by the dean that they will not be closing. I was told that even if Mount Vernon Hospital shuts down, Hopfer is a separate entity through Sound Shore and it will not affect us. It wasn't really that competitive. As long as you have a decent gpa and you pass the NET that's all it takes. I know people who had a 3.0 gpa and barely passed the NET and got in. Private schools are usually less competitive because they are more expensive.

thanks alot there's a good chance i might end up there.

only thing affecting me is the fact that i want a BSN. How easy is it to transition into a BSN after doing the ADN? before even going to work

I plan on going to Mercy College or College of New Rochelle for my BSN after I graduate from Hopfer. Hopfer has articulation agreements with these 2 schools and several others. It is an easy transition especially if you go to a school that Hopfer has an agreement with. In that case, they will accept all of your credits and then it will probably only take a year or two more to get your BSN. Since I work full-time it was more realistic for me to get the ADN first, that way I can continue working and I can work as an RN while pursuing my BSN. Also, if you already have an ADN you have the option of taking your BSN online. I know Mercy College offers this option and lots of other schools.

miss bronx, how is school going?
