done with AA~denied Fall 2012 Program now what?

U.S.A. Florida

I am so confused and hope I can get some suggestions here. I attended college over 25 years ago, have an A.S in Computers, my gpa then was horrible 2.25 and 85% of those courses are not even applicable towards my A.A. or a nursing degree =(

After a life changing experience, my 8 year old was diagnosed with cancer, I quit my executive assistant job earning $55K and dedicated myself to being her caregiver for three years. MY daughter is now in remission and a thriving 12 year old. I just completed my AA Degree in hopes of pursuing Nursing, my dilemna, my CUM GPA is still horrible now 2.59, and it is really hindering any chances of getting into an affordable nursing school. Little did I know that I couldn't start with a clean slate!I was just denied at PBSC, I didn't meet the point cut off. I really don't want to do a private college with a $50K+ debt. I live an hour north of BCC and an hour South of IRSC, which are options I am exploring? ANY else have a CUM GPA issue? I was hoping to do FAU BSN program, but again my CUM GPA is the issue. I am beginning to feel discouraged.

Hello momcologist,

You are amazing! I am glad your little girl is in remission.

I was accepted to BCC, gpa was 3.6. Keep in mind they are only considering their required prerequisites. Honestly, it is tough to get in any school with less than a 3.4 gpa. I had friends in your situation they either repeated courses or went to a private school.

I wish you the best!

Congrats on your daughter!!

The point system at PBSC is based off more than GPA. Is there anyway to retake the HESI and try for more points? Or maybe take Critical Thinking or volunteer. I have a similar situation with a 2.63 GPA but depending on my HESI score, I could potentially have 27.63 points. It might take a little time to get your points up there, but don't give up. If you are local, go see Ms. Myrick. She is amazing and will guide you along.

There is something called academic forgiveness for classes taken over ten years ago. You would have to check with your school you received your AA from to see if they participate in such a thing.

Might help your overall GPA...

Which program did you get denied in at PBSC. Full time Lake Worth? Sometimes the point structure is a bit lower for Spring admissions because they admit to all 3sections in January ... keep that in mind! Good luck!

I had applied for the Fall 2012 Fulltime ADN RN Program, there is a second application for the Spring deadline October. The only thing this college offers is Grade Forgiveness, where I can retake any F's or D' grades and replace them, but I would spend another two years and lots of money doing that. My only other option right now is either commuting an hour north of me or an hour south of me to State Colleges that offer a bit more lenient entrance requirements and affordable, but that would be a TWO year commitment of commuting for the entire program/clinicals as early as 5am....or attending Keiser down the road from me...and spending $40K+...which I really can't afford....I am really torn

Great news about your daughter!! :yeah:

I understand you said you didn't want to do a private school... but I just signed up for Keiser in Tampa and honestly I highly recommend it. I know it has a huge tuition price, BUT you can get in without your GPA being looked at (you go through an interview process which I know you won't have an issue with and must pass the TEAS test), and you are done in less than 2 years (16 months to be exact).

About the tuition, there are several ways to lower the cost with schlorships. I have a whole list of sites they gave me if you're interested. I have to admit I've applied to lots of them and haven't heard back on any but I'm not giving up.

Also, you can sign up with a non-profit (something like that) hospital for 2 years and they will pay off (or help you pay off?) your student loans.

Plus, if you hold at least a 3.3 at the end of one semester, you get $375 or $500 schlorship you can use for your next semester (after 4 semesters that could be at least $1,500 off).

Anyway.... I really really really didn't want to go this route myself because of the cost of tuition, but all the positives outweighed that major debit negative for me and my family.

I hope that maybe after you read this you'll think more about Keiser. I've tried to do a lot of research on them with reviews but I keep reading about complains on the tuition costs...which we get so I'm not counting those reviews. Other than that, I haven't heard anything bad about the school. I start in January in Tampa and everyone that I've came across at the school (staff people) have been amazingly helpful.

Well, good luck which ever route you decide but please rethink about Keiser. :)

(Sorry for any typos - I didn't do a spell check.)

Thanx Stephalina I happen to live down the street from the West Palm Beach campus, is that a flexible program of strictly full time? I explored South University, it's an BSN RN program in 16 months but have to commit full time mon-fri 9-4 and roughly about 40+k, I need to be able to at least work full time
