DON?

Any of you thought about being or are a DON? The assisted living facility where I work at recently obtained new ownership and I just learned they are getting a new administrator and DON. They offered the DON position to us floor nurses first before they advertise. I kind of thought about it for a minute, but It would probably be a long shot for me to be a decent one. I'm the only male nurse there and I'm pretty laid back and quiet, plus I don't like 1st shift. On the other hand, I have been there the longest of the nurses (which is'nt saying a lot as the turnover is high) and I would be fair as I know what its like to work on the floor and I'm getting tired of the same old (mostly pill passing every day) and getting in trouble over small things occasionally. I'm sure it would be totally different with additional stressors, but would get rid of some too. I don't know about the pay, but would think it would be a little better and I'm just realizing I'm still going to be struggling to pay my bills even after filing bankruptcy since I want to keep my car and house and still have the HE and student loans. Just a thought, any comments?

I once took a job as facility manager for a RCAC/assisted living.

Hours were somewhat flexible, pay was ok...salary though, and I ended up putting in about 70 hours a week (seriously) I was on call 24/7 all of the time!!

It wasn't worth it. And had moments that were a total nightmare.

After just a few months, I found that it definately was not the dream job that I had expected it would be. I was responsible for all of the daily operations, food service and ordering, admissions, fill in for all positions, pre-admission interviews, billing, end of month MARS, all MD orders, etc, etc. I really wouldn't recommend this type of position. I was much happier as a floor nurse in LTC, and went right back to it! Never looked back!
