Dominican College, NY ABSN 2013-2014

U.S.A. New York

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone here has applied to the Accelerated BSN nursing program at Dominican College in NY starting in May 2013?

@Andy1415 Frustrated for lack of a better word...Join the club. #ClubFrustration Kudos to you for saving up. I have to figure out what the heck I'm going to because... Due to an ex , my credit is in the low 6's so Sallie Mae laughed at me applying. It's stressful. No one can give me an answer as to how much the program costs as a whole. These dang immunization forms are killing me. The two step PPD is insane with the time frame especially if they want the physical dated after the first of May but sent in before the 16th. I'm losing my mind over here. The background check on Certified was easy. I still have to take my drug test. Have you registered for classes yet?

No, I still haven't registered for classes yet. Thanks and congrats on getting in! Maybe you can talk to the financial aid people? One of the women who works there was telling me that some students turn to some credit union near by. Yeah the 2 step PPD is a pain, I opted to get the blood titers. I believe the program is about $12,000 per trimester and there are 3 trimesters. I would say with books/fees it will probably end up costing about $40,000 for the year :/.

Well...it's all worth it in the end. There probably won't be as many of us as there were in orientation and probably less once we get closer to graduation. I heard people drop out like flies due to financial and issues relating to the program. I just saw the rest of your earlier message. What would you like to ask me? I'm an open book. I will share whatever I know about the program. Sorry for the late response. Oh and also...are you working right now? What made you wanna do nursing? What did you do before...like, what was your first degree in?

Yeah I have heard that many people drop after the first semester. I am working right now as a Biology tutor and test proctor at a community college. I am going into nursing because I want to be a part of the medical profession and help people. My degree is in Biology with a minor in Business.

Hey Andy1415, for MedSurg 1 and 2 which you'll probably take in October and February, I DEFINITELY recommend the most up to date textbook. That thing is going to become your Bible haha. For some of the other classes I got an edition older than the one recommended and still did well in my classes

Thank you Gennisa...I heard that those are tough courses from everyone! I will definitely get the most up to date with those. Oh I had a question about a few things:

1) For the CPR is the Heartsaver CPR AED good enough to fulfill the requirement for Dominican or is it the BLS AHA CPR the one we need to take?

2)For the Professional we only need it from 5/1/14-5/1/15...Does that mean we finish with clinicals all together in April?

How about yourself? What's your background and what made you want to get into nursing?

No problem! For MedSurg 1 and 2, the best things you can do are to realize you have no life for the 2 months you have those classes, study 24/7, and get a good study group. And buy an NCLEX review book, I did a ton of practice questions when studying for exams and I feel like that made a huge difference. The CPR you need is BLS AHA CPR, the other Certified Background stuff I'm not sure about. Your best bet would be to go to the school and talk to Dr. ******, the coordinator of ABSN and she should tell you what you need

Thanks and yeah I cant wait to start MedSurg (sarcasm) lol. I'm going to see if I can go see her tomorrow. Congrats on getting to the home stretch. I'm ordering some NCLEX review books from amazon right now. Thanks for the advice!
