I loving sobriety, enjoying every day. Work as health advocate for 6 mos, with strict call audits. Written up today for not meeting my productivity goals. I go to DEC 2/12. I am very concerned, How will this look. I am going to ask for patient care privelages. Any Advice, feed back or comfort. I a little down now.

I can imagine why that would put you in a bad way, but whatever you do, don't let it tempt you to give up your sobriety!

I'm curious as to what, exactly, failure to "meet productivity goals" means in your job? Why were you written up, and what are the consequences if you don't improve? Are the productivity goals even reasonable? And what is DEC, and do you think asking for additional privileges is a good idea when you've been told that you're not meeting the standards for your current position?

Please don't take these questions as insulting; I want to help you, but I can't without a better description of what the actual problem is. I have 20 years in recovery, so I know what it's like being a healthcare worker with an alcohol problem. I'm sorry you're having a bad time.

To meet productivit goals we have to meet 21 attributes, with multiple threads with in each attribute. The score card is yes or no. No in between. My employment will be terminated If my scores dont improve by end of this month. As far as the goals being reasonable lets just say I've been her just over 6mos. we've lost 3 nurses including a supervisor. 1 Nurse is currently out on a leave of absence. DEC I where California nursing in Diversion go in front of boards members/BRN and get re-evaulated. It's a big deal I go this thursday. I'm gonna ask for patient care privelages. I was told by my case manager w/Maximus the co. that handles the diversion program to ask for patient care privleges. Since my last post Per my manager I have been diligent about being consistent on my calls, having applied her coaching skills and am doing really good. Also my manager hasn't said anything to my case manager. Any thoughts?

I'm still having trouble visualizing what you do as a "health advocate". Are you a nurse? And if not, how do you get patient care privileges in this position?

I don't think you have anything to lose by asking, though. And it does sound like those "attributes" you speak of are rather subjective, meaning the scores are based on someone's (or several someones') opinion, rather than a neutral assessment of performance. My organization has something called the Core Values, which include integrity, excellence, service, and several other equally pleasant-sounding but largely immeasurable attributes' they look great on paper, but when I as a manager have to evaluate one of my employees on how they demonstrate the Core Values, it's really hard to quantify.

I'm sorry that you're subjected to a system like that; it rarely serves the employee well, and if your supervisors aren't invested in the hard work that goes into such an evaluation, it may not yield the results you want. So you may as well keep working to improve your scores, and ask for the privileges like you are planning.....as I said, you've got nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Good luck!

I was going to ask why it might affect your status in IPN also. in my state, we have peer. They don't care about your job if it is non-nursing. They don't need reports or anything from them. They only care about monthly evaluations, job reports and write-ups if you are working in a nurse capacity. So anything that happens at a non-nursing job is not their business nor do they hear about it.
