Hello,
My employer offers extended sick benefits which total about 1100 hours that renews every 5 years for people that are off work with an illness greater than 2 weeks. The first 2 weeks you use your pto time after that you can use hours from your extended sick bank. When I call in with my illness I can use my extended illness hours so it doesn't effect my pto time. I was wondering if anyone else has this benefit. We also get long term disability but I was wondering more about how your employer handles people being off work with chronic illnesses. Any information will be great... thanks.
Sometimes I feel like I am stuck where I work because of this benefit I am off work an average of 2-4 weeks because of my illness (a year) so it helps greatly having this bank to draw from.

I used to work for Mayo. Their policy is pretty clear. After 2 days of "sick time" then short term disability kicks in. IF... you choose.
In other words, let's say I have the flu. I would use my sick time until I was better. Sick time is accrued. However, in my case I had hand surgery. I had complications from minor hand surgery and I couldn't return to work until both hands worked well. Fair enough. I used my sick time until it ran out and then I used my company paid STD (nooo, not a sexually tx'd dx,) but short term disability.
Mayo is the exception to the rules most of the time.
BTW... did I mention I am a Mayo fan? LOL~~~~ Mayo has their fair share of issues like ANY other hospital but the difference is that the really try to work with employees. They seriously attempt to fix what is wrong.
Does your hospital do the same?

Absolutely not. I was put on medical leave by my employer due to a work related illness. The worker comp insurance company refuses to pay me any type of disability payments. I've had to get a lawyer to force them to pay out like they are supposed to.
So far I've use up all of my sick and vacation time to make sure I've got some income coming in until all of this is resolved. Although, it looks like my employer is going to lay me off, because they say they have no other positions that can transfer me to.

Thats what I was thinking. For someone like myself with a chronic illness it is one of the best benefits I can have it ends up being about 9 ish months of pay then I fall into my long term disability. I have ms so when it acts up if I have a day of fatigue I just call in and say "I have MS today" and it comes out of the extended sick bank.
I would eventually like to move out of state but haven't really heard of another hospital doing the same thing and it has been a blessing. My sick time and pto time are in the same bank otherwise so if I call in with the flu or an illness other than my chronic illness it comes out of my regular pto bank. My friend works up in Green Bay and has benefits that are somewhat similiar...

We have to bank our sick hours, but there's no limit to how many can be saved. I believe I have around 500 hours banked. And then there's disability, but I don't quite understand how that all plays into sick leave. I guess I'll find out when I have to use one or the other or both.

No, we have to use our PTO. Many people call in sick so much they aren't prepared for an emergency. I try to hold on to enoug PTO for emergencies. We have short-term and long-term disability plans that pay a portion of our salary should disaster strike. I forget the terms, but I think short-term is more than two weeks out.

we have to use pto, and if anything may extend over 3 days, we should start a fmla application process. this covers your own illness, or family illness. bereavement is yet another process.

No, don't have (in fact, we get written warnings if we call off more than 6 times a year).
