Does interview at LPN school (after waiting 3 months) mean I am accepted?

Published

i have an interview for rochester general hospital isabella g. hart school of practical nursing next friday. three months ago i took the entrance exam and figured that i would have to take it again next year and this year was a bust. but i got a call a few days ago and the administrative assistant told me that the director said that, although certain parts of the exam i scored "average," she wanted to schedule an interview with me. :w00t:

i was shocked because i thought that only ones with high marks on the exam would be considered. i am going to college now and have excellent grades. i think that helped me, along with other aspects of my application (reference letters from work, my essay). the session begins in august.

i know that the interviews vary from basic to more in-depth depending on the type of program (this is lpn program).

my question is, would you assume (in this case) that because i have an interview i'm pretty much in?

thanks!

Sigh...I was waitlisted. Would you care to share your background, and what you got on the TEAS test. I am thinking about reapplying for next year and taking some classes in the meantime. Thanks and CONGRATS!!!

From IGH? (If so, was it for the full-time or part-time program?) The part-time program that I was accepted for was moved to January instead of this August and they are trying to get more people interested in the part-time program.

I did not do great on the TeasV. But I had straight As on my college transcript for the previous semester and provided them with a copy of my certificate for making the dean's list. I am almost finished with my medical administrative assistant degree program and I had taken A&P I & A&P II, medical terminology, introduction to healthcare (all healthcare related classes) along with the general classes like English, math, physc., etc.

Every applicant is going to say that they want to be a nurse because they like helping people. But, having proof is a plus; like volunteering. I informed them that I was starting as a hospice volunteer care aid this month and begin training for that this week now that they have completed their background check on me. I will be acting as a nurse assistant and learning nursing skills like giving (pre-measured) oral medications, bathing, feeding, communicating with terminally ill patients and thier families....By diving in and starting your training now, you show them that you are ready and able to be a nurse and will not drop out of the program. Because it is a hospice home and not a medical facility, I am able to do nursing tasks and am not liable if a resident is hurt; (the RN who operates the home is). This is the difference between doing paid homecare by yourself---which I could do, but don't want the risk and I don't want to be alone. I won't be alone except for when I volunteer for some 8-12 p.m. shifts that no one wants to do. (I can do my homework there). The residents are usually sleeping all of the time. The house has 2 terminally ill residents at all times for a limit of 3 months. If there were any more, then it would be deemed a medical facility by the state and there would be regulations that would need to be followed. Instead, this is just a home and volunteers and family members are there all of the time. I see it as a way to get trained for free, gain experience, and get great references from the retired nurses I will be working with. Also, I will get great advice from these nurses.

Volunteering at a hospital, you won't be able to do any hands-on tasks or anything that will give you any experience. So, I advise you to volunteer for a hospice home. Do a Google search. It is not a dreary atmosphere. They actually are very positive there and have a holistic ideology. The homes have two resident suites with each having their own bathrooms, 2 family rooms for the resident and their families, one main area in the middle with an office and kitchen where we can cook, bake, and eat, and a basement where we congregate for meetings. The people there are really nice and are always happy--not sad--most of the time.

Hey everyone I just received my acceptance letter today. I wanted to know who else received there letter.

For the full time or part-time program? I got my letter of acceptance on June 1st (which was the deadline that they were supposed to send them out). I am in the part-time program now moved to January and has been changed to 18 months instead of 20. So, 1 yr. ½..not that bad.

I am in the full-time program. I didn't do well on the Teas exam either but was told I was in the 85% range. I also have 60 college credits with a 3.5 gpa and worked as a nursing assistant for 6 years.

Did you enjoy being a CNA? Did you just decide to be a nurse now or were you pursuing another career? Are you starting in August? Because you begin before me, I would hope to stay updated on how the program is if you don't mind : ) I can't wait to start.

I actually too0 some courses through the U of R. A and P (both 1 and 2) and got A minuses in both. Took microbiology and got a B+ and took Growth and Development and got an A. I already have a bachelors degree as well in finance. I have also been volunterring at a hospice just like you describe. I really am suprised I didn't get accepted.

OMG, that sounds very weird that you did not get in. So, you were going for a career in finance while you were working as a CNA?

no, I was an accountant, laid off THREE times in as many years making a career change. Job market is horrible in Rochester!!

Not just Rochester.

BOCES is accepting applicants now.

Wow I am really surprised that you didn't get in. How did the interview go? I did see that the Boces in Spencerport is having an LPN program next year. Well maybe you will still get in since you are wait listed. Good Luck

upstategirl, I did enjoy working as a CNA but I always knew that I could do more. I always wanted to be a nurse but didn't have the time to attend full-time. I can't wait to start either. I have a financial aid appointment on Thursday.
