obtaining certification in your specialty?
my previous hospital reimbursed us for the test and travel expenses if we passed our exam.
we did not receive extra pay for being certified but it did count toward clinical laddering.
my new hospital doesn't seem to promote certification because they don't reimburse or pay for the exam, and also don't put "rnc" or other credentials on our name tags unless we are an advanced practice nurse (practitioner, crna, midwife).
just wondering if your hospital encourages nurses to stretch and grow through national certification and if so, how do they show it...
thanks in advance for any comments! tomorrow i will be filling out an "employee satisfaction survey" and would love to include information about encouraging them to support certification... your input will help me learn about how other hospitals deal with this subject.
I should probably add that I haven't kept up with all the CEU's required to keep me certified. The hospital will only pay for one outside day-long seminar/year. Most I'd be interested in are worth just 6 to 7 CEU's and cost upwards of $75.00. I'm supposed to have 150 CEU's in order to retain certification and I admit to being too cheap to pay the expenses for most of the CEU's required. I'd rather take the test over again in 2005 and have my hospital foot the bill if I decide to be re-certified (and if I'm SURE I'll pass).

My employer pays for our license renewals and the cost of certification exams (if we pass).
