Does anyone have any good tips on writing a "winning" cover letter and/or resume?

Hi I graduate this December with my BSN and want to get a head start on putting my resume and cover letter together because I know the semester is going to fly by. I have gotten examples from friends who have put together CV's but I do not have enough experience as a new grad to do that and I honestly think it is a little over the top at this point in my life. My ultimate goal is to work in L&D, but I am focusing on applying for mother/baby positions because I want to be completely comfortable in my postpartum assessments before transitioning. I have designed my own class to work in L&D with a preceptor in the past and have experience working as a tech/unit secretary in a small labor and delivery unit. I am forced to move after I graduate and I really REALLY want to work at Hoag Hospital in Newport (magnet status = extra competitive). I am really looking for the edge so I can get in the door and have the opportunity to be called in for an interview. I am looking for some advice or would love examples (you could cross out all personal info, i would expect it) that will give me an edge. Sorry this is so lengthly, but I have been stressing all summer and my resume is less than impressive. Is it good to list all clinical experiences from school or only one's pertaining to the position I am applying! Thank you :)

Every employer expects a new grad to have a short resume. Include jobs that have led you into nursing so they can see a progression of good work habits.

The cover letter is sales. Sell yourself. You did a great job in the post. Make sure you include your initiative to work out a schedule that heads you in a direction. Employers like to see that you have done everything you can to prepare for this challenge. You might mention 1 example of your experiences that show you to be competent in a work like situation.

After every interview follow up with a thank you letter.

If you do not get the job of your dreams, call and ask how you can improve. Employers like to act all knowing so asking for improvements could make their day.

Don't stress over this too much. Most schools at least offer assistance in this area. Connect with the nurses in the area you want to work. They may be able to give positive feedback that may put you to the top of the pile.

Take a deep breath. You will need it this semester.

Best of luck.

Okay I have been working on my resume!! Almost done, I kind of just went at it on my own and updated the same format I've been using for years. Should I include a section with ALL of my clinical experiences, I have been at a different hospital every semester for 3 years, because I do not plan to stay in Nor Cal and wanted experience with different facilities. Or...should I only include clinical experiences that relate to the job I want (such as the class I developed with faculty to complete extra hours in OB or working at a public health agency educating low-income, underprivileged woman on prenatal care and being a labor coach. I need help!!!! Also, would someone review my resume and give me their honest opinion as well as some pointers. I could PM my resume to you. Thanks

I just left Hoag Hosp. L&D recently. It's a wonderful place to be a new grad, and they are hiring. The unit is "just" busy enough and "just" high risk enough to get an excellent learning experience WITHOUT pulling your hair out. Too much anyway!

The docs are mostly really great. Ratio's 1:1 most of the time. You'll see and do everything. The nurses are great! I returned to L&D there after about 8 years away - everyone was really patient catching me up on all the new stuff.

PM me if you'd like me to review your resume....or just talk more about Hoag, PP vs. L&D, etc. I can give you contacts etc. You are obviously very intelligent and well spoken. You'll do well.

I sent you my resume in a private message, but it is not showing in my sent box so I just want to make sure you got it! Thanks :)

Most schools offer a resume clinic of some sort. These folks usually have the latest and greatest ideas for resumes so look around, you might find something good.
