Doctors Yelling

A doctor made her rounds yesterday found out that one of her orders was not carried out. Then she started yelling and she got infuriated her more when she checked the medication sheet and saw that it was not updated with her new medications. It was horrible listening to that shouting. It's irritating. I was thankful that my colleague who carried out her orders (by the way we are still trainees so it's the regular that will get the responsibility) because if my colleague were there she (my colleague) would have heard those ugly and unprofessional yelling.

I don't know but if I were yelled by that doctor, I would raise my voice too and remind the doctor that it's so unprofessional acting like that. Sometimes doctors act that way because nurses treat them as gods and goddesses--and lick their feet. Oh no not for me...I wouldn't let a doctor just insult me because of that.

Been yelled at by some and have cut some off when the yelling started. It depends on if it is a personal attack or the "I'm tired of my orders not being followed" kind of tantrum. There are times when I appriciate a little yelling from the docs. The umpteenth time I have to beg pharmacy for hours to please send up my "STAT" electrolyte replacement on a patient with ectopy problems I think the doc is perfectly in his rights to do a little yelling...at them. Sometimes polite conversation doesn't get the job done.

We have several at work who are bad but one in particular. He yells and gets upset over nothing. He treats the staff horribly and of course nothing is ever done about it. He's gotten irritated with me before but never yelled. I'm sure it's coming though since he's yelled at just about everybody at least once. I'm just worried because I cry way too easily over stupid stuff, and I know if he yells at me or even gets snippy I'll tear up. And I've heard from others you NEVER want to cry in front of him or show that he's gotten to you because then he'll be worse. What a lovely person to work with. It's unavoidable too because it's an operating room type situation and I can't just avoid him, I'm stuck in a room with him. Aaah!

sometimes I wonder why the doctors yell....... Its it that its ethical to them and not ethical to nurses. The annoying thing is that you have to assist the same 'yelling' doctor to see the patient or perform procedures.

I have found that when most yell, they are trying to make sure that you "get it". So here is what I would say and have said in that situation:

Dr. X, I understand that you are upset that your order was not carried out, I assure you I will attend to this immediatly but I must ask you to keep your voice down, you are upsetting staff and patients.

This has worked most days although several times I have threatened to get security if they do not calm themselves.

We all get testy but it's such bad form to yell.......I try to save them from making a fool of themselves.

I have been yelled at by a doctor or two over the past 32 years. I say "if you can't speak to me in a normal tone of voice then this conversation is over" 1 of 2 things happen. They calm down or they get worse and I walk away and they end up getting written up by administration when the patients complain about the doctor yelling at the nurse
