Yes, states should give NPs more autonomy. The lack of planning on the part some physician-immigrants from Latin America has nothing to do with whether or not professionals such as NPs should be practicing free of limitations.

Just like international nurses, physicians from foreign countries have to meet the same requirements the US doctors do. I personally would want a qualified NP treating me than an unqualified doctor.

I saw this on the news. While I do understand the shortage of physicians in the US, I think that this piece of news was meant to influence the immigration reform. In my opinion, they could have focused on helping young people be more motivated to go for med school.

It's not so much a matter of "qualified" vs. "unqualified." A lot of the foreign physicians are well-educated, experienced, and competent -- however, TPTB in US medicine have made it nearly impossible for physicians from other countries to get licensed (unless they are educated in the US). It doesn't matter how well-educated you are, or how many years of successful practice you have in another country (even other first-world countries). I just wish that the nursing leadership in the US did as good a job of looking out for the interests of US nurses as the medical community does of looking out for the interests of US physicians.
