Before I was a nurse I thought only doctors wore lab coats. On my floor the other day, the secretary, charge nurse, and team leader were all wearing lab coats. Do any floor nurses wear them? I wouldn't mind buying myself a stylish lab coat but I don't want to look like I'm putting on airs. Just FYI I'm a floor nurse.

I think it is ridiculous that everyone is wearing a lab coat. I went to a hospital in NYC to visit a relative. everyone who came in the room with scrub attire my relative thought was the nurse. and none of them were. maintenance, transport and secretary all wore scrubs. I think that is very confusing to patients. and of course everyone's ID card was facing the wrong way.

I like to wear a short scrub top that snaps or buttons. I leave it open though. I like the extra pockets that it gives me as well as it being a little warmer when the unit is cool. I don't like long sleeves. I usually would wear the printed ones over a solid top. I always wear my ID facing outward and introduce myself to the patient.

I know during my nursing school for LPN we had short sleeve lab coats that we had to wear. I hated wearing it because I always got called the doctor, not only from the lab coat but because I am Male.

I think you shouldn't wear one unless it is mandated as part of uniform. They should be wearing a scrub jacket, not a lab coat.
