Do you wear a lab coat?
I think it is ridiculous that everyone is wearing a lab coat. I went to a hospital in NYC to visit a relative. everyone who came in the room with scrub attire my relative thought was the nurse. and none of them were. maintenance, transport and secretary all wore scrubs. I think that is very confusing to patients. and of course everyone's ID card was facing the wrong way.

Med surg patient ratio
Cheryl. you dont want to know. When I was a new grad the census on my floor was 40. 3 RNs and 2 CNA and a clerk on a good day. If the floor was not full to capacity rest assured that the ER/ICU would be calling to take care of that. And to top it off we were not told until we finished orientation that we only had one weekend off a month.

Med surg patient ratio
Depends on what part of the country you work. In NYC it is much, much higher than that on a med/surg unit.

Opinions on Wellpoint as employer
onegoodnerve sorry to hear that. I know the feeling I was also thinking of taking a telephonic case management as well and would appreciate any info as well. Are you required to do a year of training at their site before you transition to home? good luck

Please tell me that there will be a day
It will get better. Unfortunately you will come across other rude nurses like that. I remember working third shift as a new nurse and the next shift nurse was always in a bad mood looking for something to be mad about. I remember years later a newer nurse came on and I would help her and give her tips because I knew what it felt like to be treated not so nice when I was new. My orientation was also cut and the instructors were like you will be fine your orientation is over. With 12 patients and the possibility of 2 more admissions for me before the shift was over. Thank goodness when I was placed finally placed on a unit I had great co workers who didn't mind taking a minute or two to teach me something.

LPN first, then RN later
Hi, first look into what the job market is like in your area for LPNs. If it is good then I would say yes go for it and try to get a job that offers some type of tuition assistance to help pay for your continued studies. If there are associate degree/hospital program(mostly being phased out but some still exist) programs where you live it is during the first year of completion that you will be prepared to sit for the LPN boards. I took my boards many years ago so if anyone has more current information it would be great. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you

RN Mom: Where Do Nurses Live in New York City?
Have you considered the Bronx. The Pelham parkway/Morris Park area is nice and it is very close to the subway. The Throggsneck area is also nice and you have the express bus into Manhattan. There is also an area called country club that is very nice. The Bronx High school of science and another specialized HS are near but they are very selective. Pelham Parkway you have Jacobi Medical Center which is part of the health and hospital corp. and it is a level one trauma center, snake bite center and has a hyperbaric chamber. It is located next to Einstein medical school and Einstein hospital which is part of Montefiore hospital. The Bronx in general gets a a bad rep but there are many areas that are very nice and affordable when compared to the other boro. Just offering my two cents so that you have options. Hope this helps.
