Hey everyone! I want to say thank you in advance for taking the time to read/answer my question. About two weeks ago I applied for multiple Patient Care Tech positions at a local hospital. This was before I got my acceptance letter for the accelerated BSN program that starts May 12th. I applied to these spots because I was convinced I wasn't going to get accepted to the accelerated program, just the traditional BSN program, so I thought it would be nice to gain some experience over the summer before I started. Now, fast forward to this past friday, and I received my acceptance letter from the university I applied to. This morning, I received a call from the hospital I applied to over two weeks ago, and they wanted to conduct a phone interview regarding the positions that I had applied for online. Instead of dragging them through a bunch of questions, I decided to tell them right before the interview on the phone started that I wasn't able to take their 5 week full time day course on all the basics they require....because my nursing school would get in the way, and I apologized for applying and then turning down the interview. She didn't seem mad, in fact she said if I come to find there is a way I can work around nursing school that I should give her a call...but I feel absolutely terrible! I also decided on Friday after finding out I got into the accelerated program that I would not hold a job while in nursing school so that I can focus 100% on my studies. I feel terrible about passing up such a wonderful opportunity at a great hospital...I'm hoping that if I apply there after I become an RN, they won't hold it against me. Sorry for this being so long, but I would love some of your feedback!
THANKS
Sorry to everyone, that wasn't much of a question...hah

IMO, I think you absolutely did the right thing. You were honest with them and gracious about the offer. The lady from the hospital wouldn't have been so nice nor would she have made the offer to let you still take the position pending your availability if you hadn't handled it well. I doubt sincerely they would ever hold it against you, so try not to worry too much! Good luck in school!

I doubt they would hold it against you, if HR remembers you, they will remember you turned it down b/c you were going to be attending NS and will know you followed through with that plan since your name would be presented to them for an RN position. I wouldn't worry about it if I was you. Besides, is there any chance that you could be doing a clinical at that hospital? I think (but am not positive) that the student gets to pick where they do their clinical at my school.

I don't see why it should be a problem at all! You were very upfront and honest about everything.
Congratulations on being accepted, and good luck in your program.

HR might remember you; and it is all good...
1) You were planning for if you were not accepted.
2) You told them right away that you *will* be a nurse.
3) *They* offered to talk to you again if you can find the time to work *for* them.
Congratulations on the acceptance and good luck in school!

I just want to say thanks to all of you who took the time to read and respond! I actually got another call from another recruiter at the same hospital about thirty minutes ago...they offered me a spot in their 5 week training course, because they had no clue I had told the other recruiter I couldn't take the spot. After talking to the second recruiter, I feel much better, because we both agreed that if I decide after a semester of nursing school that I can handle a job on the weekends, that I could call them and get in there. And the good thing about that is, I wouldn't have to take the 5 week training course, because my 1st semester of nursing school would take care of what they teach in the 5 week class. It's nice to know they are so supportive about this! And its great knowing that I can get support from everyone on this website, too. I look forward to going on my journey to become a nurse! And I believe someone asked if our school does clinicals at this particular hospital...I'm not 100% positive, but I believe so! I'll find out more at my orientation for school in a month. Thanks for everyone's help and support. I appreciate it very much! Have a wonderful day :)

I think you should not feel terrible about yourself, I mean everyone would do the same thing if they were in your situation
and it is understandable!
maybe by turning down that opportunity, you indirectly give that job for someone else who really needs that job more than you do:D
