Do we really need New Grad RN Program?

Published

Do we really need this program? Is it true that those people who have less than 12 months since graduation are qualified for this? What about those people who are more than 12 months? Does it mean they are not qualified anymore? so what's gonna be the future of those people who did not undergo new grad program??? I'm really confused right now..

I did not go through a new grad program. Rather, I was hired and basically thrown into the fire. It was probably rougher in the beginning and entailed a higher risk of not making it but at this point, I'd be happy to match my skills and knowledge with anybody else. So no, I don't think new grad programs are the be-all, end-all. That said, I do think a good NG program is the best way to start one's career.

From all that I've read, after 6-12 months post-graduation, most new grad programs will give a pass in favor of "newer" new grads.

New grad programs are meant to ease the transition from student nurse to professional nurse. They are not mandatory. Its up to a hospital whether to have a new grad program or not. But in my opinion they are a fantastic idea and I am so glad that they are becoming the norm. If you want more information go to the versant website and I think they describe it well. Not exactly sure what your confusion is but New Grad programs are for new graduates just after graduation from nursing school. In this tough economy some new graduates are not finding jobs for 2-3 years after graduation.

If you didn't do a new grad program, that's fine. It makes no difference. All it is is another method to gain experience as a professional nurse. Do you want to work on a floor right away or do you want some extra training and guidance through a formal new grad training program.
